I'm not sure I would really call Houston a team with "little offensive talent".

Less isolation-based offenses caused by teams scrambling more on defense, and if you note the box scores for many of the 50 point games you'll notice the the players who do so draw FTs like nuts.

No one in the league is drawing FTs like crazy except Durant and Harden, fwiw.

9x since '09...

so 2 of the 9 times are from Brandon Jennings right?

GOOD TOPIC it's true. whenever i scout for even just 40 point games, most guys barely have any in their game log. howard for example hasn't scored 40 since sometime last season (i think).

when lebron scored his career high of 56, i figured it was one career high of many to come. well that was years ago, how many i forget, but he never has hit 56 again which always surprises me.

kobe, wade, carmelo are perfectly capable of scoring 50. if brandon jennings has done it, i know for sure a few guys can. it just takes the right night.
real gm logic;

I still remember Gilbert dropping 60 on Kobe and the Lakers on their own home court. Could you imagine if someone dropped 60 on LeBron in his prime on his own home court? I mean, people got excited over 2 all star game blocks, the Internet would crash if that happened lol

Let some young players develop and I think we'll see some more 50 pt games.

Off my head I can see:
Durant Lebron Melo Harden Kyrie Curry - Nice chance at hitting 50.

Aldridge Gay Lawson Jennings Westbrook Bryant - Who have the tools to hit 50, but long shot to actually do it.

Cousins Lilliard - Who could develop into players that could hit 50 sometime.

Wiggins Parker Shabazz - Undrafted players that have potential to be big time scorers in the league.

Not saying all these players will hit 50, and that there will be a flux of 50 pt games, but its not impossible. I don't expect most of the players I listed to hit 50 though, just noting that the talent pool of scorers isn't as bad as it seems.

It's not about the superteams, it's about the defense. People always talk about how much tougher and more physical the game was back in the '80s and '90s, but the fact of the matter is that today's defenses are smarter. Defensive schemes by the likes of Tom Thibodeau and Gregg Popovich are designed to contain superstars and have been adopted in some fashion by nearly every team in the league.

Didn't we have a thread about this a while ago? It's the defenses.

LeBron, Durant and Melo are the only ones capable of putting up multiple 50 point games in a season at this point. Durant could probably score 60 considering his ability and efficiency, but he'll never take take enough shots to get that much, partially because he doesn't need to.

I wonder how many of those 18 in 06-07 were Kobe's. One 50 point is special these days, his 4 straight including 2 60s is mind-boggling in hindsight.

I don't think circumstances have allowed for it much lately. If someone gets to 40 in a blowout, the prevailing thought is to sit them to avoid injury or showboating. For contenders, in particular, this is just smart if you take the longview of the season. Bron certainly could've stayed in some games and gone for more 40+ games or triple-doubles, but Spo isn't bout dat life. Hell, Durant too. Brooks doesn't leave him in there to hang big numbers on the opposition. So basically, the two best scorers in the league have leashes that keep them from beasting more often. PEACE.

It's the combination of defense, 'superteams' and less volume scorers

Like that other guy said (I just looked it up to confirm) 10 of the 18 50+ point games that season were done by Kobe. He was just on another level entirely.

Even Lebron's had only 9 50 point games in his career.

That's not a lot considering he's the best in the league. Of course he will have less on the Heat now that he has plenty of help alongside Bosh/Allen/Wade and co.

he passes a lot, i think he could drop some 50 point games, he has done it as a heat member against orlando

Lebron just does not care about it. He said, if he sees open teammate, he just has to pass it, it is his mindset. He is not going to gun for it just for the sake of thing. If it is needed, he will get it.

I am not sure about Kobe scoring 50 this year, because it often does not help his team and they need to win.

I am pretty sure Durant will have at least one more 50 point game with 20+ FTAs this year.

There was a game like two weeks ago where Melo had 36-38 points at the end of the third quarter, so I expected him to make it, but he had 4 points in 4th quarter. He is going to have one this year too.
