Why the Jazz keeps their scrubs as starters?

Post#1 » by justinian » Mon Feb 25, 2013 5:17 pm

Watching the game the other night when they got plowed by Clippers, made me begged the question - Why in the world would coach Ty Corbin have these guys as the starters?

starters:
PG: Jamaal Tinsley
SG: Randy Foyle
C: Al Jefferson
PF: Paul Millsap
SF: Marvin Willaims

bench
PG: Alec Burks
SG: Gordon Hayward
C: Enes Kanter
PF: Derrick Favor
SF: DeMarre Carroll

WTF!? Why not play your young studs who can only get better by playing more, tell me position-by-position that these guys shouldn't be getting more minutes. This is like some kind of bizarro world, the coach and FO would rather start a bunch of guys who would otherwise be bench players in other teams than starting their dynamic, young, hustling core who are thirst for minutes.

Burks is not a PG, Millsap and Jefferson aren't scrubs, and Hayward was starting earlier, but they moved him to being the main bench guy.

Mo Williams is their actual starting PG, but he got injured

Sap and Jeff aren't even close to scrubs.

The only scrub is Tinsley and he's starting because of Mo's injury.
Maybe Hayward should start but that's it, and he still plays 27 mpg anyway so no harm no foul. Burks hasn't shown anything and the big guys should wait until Milsap or Jefferson are gone, it's not like they are playing for nothing you know, they're faring quite well in the playoff race.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

I see 4 of the 5 most serviceable players on that roster. They're in a playoff spot so it only makes sense to play your most seasoned guys.

Fans calling NBA players "scrubs" is just sad.

I don't know, That first unit seems to struggle a lot. Team seems to do better after the first quarter is over most nights.

I wouldn't mind Corbin going with the bench earlier in the 1st myself, especially if we don't have a lead.

Yeah there are some good players starting but ditching Jeff and starting the young players was clearly the way to go.
Utah is going nowhere who **** cares if they win the 8th seed a team with Kanter and especially Favors has pretty damn good potential for the future and they are hurting it by not getting this guys experience.

In RealGM parlance 'Scrub' simply means non-Allstar.

It is mind boggling why Gordon Hayward is coming off the bench still. I see it as detrimental to team success and his growth as a player.

He started earlier in the year, but didn't like being beta to Al and Paul. Off the bench he has more confidence in running the show.

Hayward is actually doing better off the bench. In the starting lineup, he was the third option on offense. Off the bench, he gets to be the #1 guy for a good stretch, and does a great job every time.

Burks needs to be starting over Tinsley while Mo is down.

Favors really needs to be starting alongside Millsap or Jefferson, since both of them are just awful, awful, awful, awful defenders.

Marvin Williams needs to be benched straight up for DeMarre Carroll. No excuse whatsoever there.

Really want Utah to start the youth movement, but I don't think it starts until next season.

Tinsley, Foye, Marvin do pretty much classify as scrubs. Al-Jeff isn't a scrub, but is a offense-only player. I honestly think he'd be best used as a 6th man. The biggest problem with the Jazz starting lineup is just how godawful it is defensively combined with its predictability on offense. Foye and Al Jefferson might be the two worst defensive starters in the league, and they are in the same lineup. Millsap is a legitimately good all around starter but isn't good enough defensively or offensively to compensate for how bad this lineup is.

The +/- numbers for the jazz starting lineup suck. Any lineup with Foye in it sucks. Most lineups with Tinsley or Williams suck.

http://stats.nba.com/teamLineups.html?T ... r%20Season

It's a travesty that Marvin Williams gets more than 20 minutes a game: DeMarre Carrol is a flat out better basketball player. Foye gets way too many minutes, especially considering Hayward is the second best player on the Jazz and certainly should be getting 36 minutes a night.

Corbin sucks.

Al Jeff has been getting ripped on lately and i dont get it. Also the Jazz are doing just fine, they are ahead of multiple teams that imo have more talent than them. This is coming from a Blazer fan as well and im pretty sure we are supposed to dislike the Jazz? For them to be where they are with the guard rotation they have is actually quite remarkable imo

The only players who should be on the bench are Foye and Williams.

Burks has gotten worse this season, and Tinsley has surprisingly played well.

I can't understand why Jazz look unstoppable at home but play crappy on the road. If the Jazz played all home games in the playoffs they'd win the championship.

To me it's more about how few minutes guys are playing than who's starting. Case in point: Gordon Hayward.

Last year: PER 15.5, 30.5 mpg, starter 58 out of 66
This year: PER 16.8, 26.7 mpg, starter 10 out of 46

Meanwhile, Randy Foye is getting 27.8 minutes a game with a PER of 12.4 (I know PER isn't everything, but in this case it should be more favorable to Randy than to Hayward). No disrespect to Randy, he's a decent role player, but Hayward is at least the 3rd best player on the team. There's no reason he shouldn't be playing 35+ minutes.

In any case, to answer the OP's question: Ty Corbin is an idiot.

They are stunning Hayward and Favors growth by not allowing them to learn from their mistake with more playing time, you can only get better by playing.

Pretty much this.

Having a coach that treats his vets like they are on the all nba team when they have never been and never will be allstars is the definition of an idiot.

Tinsley, Foye and Marvin Williams combined for 0 (yes, zero) points against the Clippers.

I don't mind using the word 'scrub' here.

Meanwhile, Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter were the only guys who could guard Blake, but instead Blake went off on Millsap and Jefferson.

Day in the life...
