I'd be ok with a 4 year max extension. If Wiz give him that 5th year, I'll be pissed.

I think we're all happy with Wall's recent stretch of superstar play but really....a max extension already?
I don't really see a need to rush into this.

Wall seems certain about his future.
"Nah, I don’t plan on it," he said of only signing a one-year deal and testing the market after next season. "I like it here. This is the city where my dad was born and raised. I want to give something back and start it here. I don’t like to follow. I like to lead my own way."

Re: Official John Wall Appreciation Thread 2.0
Statistically, he has shown slow steady improvement each year. From rookie year through 3rd year (so far):
PER: 15.8, 17.7, 18.7
TS%: .494, .502, .519
FG%: .409, .423, .444
Ass/36 minutes: 7.8, 8.0, 8.7
Pts/36 minutes: 15.6, 16.2, 18.2
If he ups the current season numbers to 19, .525, .450, 9, and 19 - I think we can safely assume he'll get the max for 5 years.
Yes, I purposely left out turnovers.

Yeah, I think a max extension is jumping the gun a bit but this is Ernie & Ted were talking about. But like I said before, there are worst things you can do the overpay Wall.... for example, trade for Rudy Gay and his max contract, watch him stink up the joint, then offer him an extension... or trade for Nene's 4 yr- $60 mil deal.

Offering him a max deal now makes no sense at all. At the very least we should try to resign him for less. If he refuses we can always match any offer next summer.

Nene has 3 years and $39 million left.

Fwiw, I would still have made that Nene trade - not knowing he had severe plantar faciitis and seeing how he played last season. Btw, using advanced math skills, I computed 13 times 4 equals 52.

Re: Official John Wall Appreciation Thread 2.0
Of course max extension is jumping the gun at this point. The Wizards can max him out anytime they want. The issue is whether he's going to be worth a max contract. Going by the past week, yes. Going by the preceding two-and-a-half seasons, no.
Just like there was no rush to make a decision on him when he was playing poorly 10 days ago, there's no need to rush now.
IF he continues playing the way he has the past week or so, he'll deserve the max, he'll get the max and he'll win a TON of basketball games. Since the max extension won't kick in until after next season anyway, there's no hurry to give it to him.

But you might not want to play those kind of games with a guy who is clearly one of the keys to the future of the franchise...to just save probably $3-$4 mil over 4 years.

Yep, it was 4 yrs - $52 mil, but I still can't see how Nene's presence helps us long term. And just as I suspected earlier this year when he was playing very well, he was not going to able to maintain that level of play because of his physical struggles. Trade him now while he's still perceived as an asset.
If I was the Wizards, first thing this offseason, I'd be offer Nene for Bledsoe & C. Butler.

I wonder if Ernie will offer the Gilbert Arenas special? Offer the max, but ask John if he's willing to take a bit less to help put a team around him?

The Spurs seem to have done pretty well doing exactly that, and they saved a lot more than $1 million/yr on the contracts of Duncan/Ginobili/Parker, all three of whom have been more productive than Wall. It isn't about playing games.
Wall will be restricted and this is a business. It makes business sense to sign him (assuming that signing him is the right move) as cheaply as possible.

I must say, those numbers look a heck of lot better now than they looked 2 weeks ago. My biggest beef with Wall was that he showed no improvement this season, but thanks to his recent production, he has booster his season averages substantially. If he can finish out the season playing better than January and February (but presumably not as good as his last 5 games which is an impossible standard), his end of year averages should look fairly satisfying.
Maybe we'll see something like 18.5 points and 8.8 assists per 36 with a TS% around .530 and a PER around 19.2. That wouldn't be quite worth a max, but at least it would show promise that he could eventually become a max player if continues to improve.
I see no advantage whatsoever in extending a max offer right now. If nothing else, we should put some financial pressure on him to continue to improve this offseason so we can see a contract year boost in production next year. I'd offer a 4-year, $44M extension to let him know that he is wanted and to give him a low risk option to ensure future income in the event of an injury. He'd probably decline, which is fine.
A month ago, I was concerned that his future contract would be low enough that he might seriously consider taking the $9.7M qualifying offer as a viable alternative. I'm no longer worried about that. Whatever the best offer on the table is for him in 2014, it's sure to be better than the QO, which means Wall is sure to accept it, which means we'll be sure to match it with RFA rights. With that the case, there is no reason to worry about losing Wall, which means there's no need to worry about "insulting" him by not offering a max extension this summer.

Hmmm..Thats a tough one in this situation because why should Wall be responsible for Ernie failing to build a bench with a half dozen 1st rd picks? If Wall leaves any money on the table, you're giving him input on what that goes towards. Do you want to go that route?

I think the idea is that it helps Wall develop by getting rid of a knucklehead and bringing in a professional post presence. Mission accomplished...maybe. I agree, I would trade him for some younger talent, if I could.

wizards offering John Wall MAX CONTRACT !
John Wall - G - Wizards
[quote]
The Wizards are expected to offer John Wall a maximum contract extension, sources told CSN Washington.
There is a debate as to whether or not Wall is worth the max, but the Wizards will do anything necessary to retain their franchise point guard as the team looks to escape the cellar. Wall previously said that he feels he's a max player, and he didn't back away from it when given the chance. "If they believe I'm their franchise guy, that I'm the max player that I feel that I am, they'll do what's best for them," he said. Wall will be a restricted free agent in the offseason.

Re: wizards offering John Wall MAX CONTRACT !
The article you quote does not say the Wizards are offering Wall a maximum contract. It says they're "expected" to offer one.
