First Visit To Sacramento And First NBA Game....

Post#1 » by perezident » Thu Mar 21, 2013 8:07 pm

Hey guys! As you all know I'm from the Bahamas and a huge Sacramento Kings Fan. I'll be coming to Sacramento for the final game of the season of our Kings. I'm so excited it's unbelievable. Not only is this my first trip to California/Sacramento, this will be my first ever NBA game.

I just wanted to know from you guys what are things to do in Sacramento. What are fun things I can do there? How's the night life? I'm not into the touristic things like looking at monuments and buildings etc. What is a reasonable hotel to stay to? Should I stay somewhere close to the arena or more downtown?

FYI, I'm bringing my girlfriend with me so I would like us to have a real memorable time. Thanks guys, I'm all in your hands

Are you going to be renting a car or taking cabs? How long will you be staying?

I'm not much of a clubbing person so I can't help with that kind of nightlife but there are some fantastic restaurants in the area.

These are the best imo and they are good date spots as well:

I'm not sure about particular hotels but I'd stay in the downtown area. There isn't really anything to do near the arena.

If you have time I'd recommend taking a day trip to San Francisco as well.

I was thinking taxing would be a better route in a big city like Sacramento

Sacramento really isn't that big. If you are going to SF afterwards (something I highly recommend to do if you have time), then absolutely take public transportation/taxi around there, but Sacramento is pretty meh and other than midtown/old town.

What do you like to do nightlife wise? Clubs, bars, restaurants? I would recommend staying away from the arena when looking for a hotel, Natomas is a pretty boring with nothing to do. Find yourself a hotel in the midtown/downtown area so that you can barhop or whatever without having to rent a car.

Stay at the Hyatt in downtown Sacramento. It has The Mix and The Park Ultra Lounge right next door. Those are two of my favorite places to go for drinks with my friends. They have DJ's, dance floor, fire pits, indoor/outdoor bar areas. Plus there are some nice places to have a sit down meal with your girlfriend. And the state capitol is across the street.

A few things.

1. Don't go to SF after a Kings game. Timing is awful. SF is probably one of the only cities on the West Coast more like an East Coast city. Don't think you can bar hop the two. It's 90 miles.
2. Sac nights are to die for given the right weather. Since it will be a Wednesday night temper your expectations however. MIX is a good place to go on a Wednesday. Midweek night life is hit and miss in Sacramento.
3. We have a ton of small museums. At one point CWebb had an African American collection at the Crocker Art Museum. The railroad museum is popular? Why I don't know. It's in Old Sac...which people get a kick out of? Why? I don't know?
4. Sac is not tourist friendly BUT if you know what you're looking for it can be found. The zoning is not good and everything is spread out. If you can let me know what you're into (either here or an IM) I can better tell you where to go.

Well I figure if he's gonna be there for at least one day, then he could go to SF during the day and come back to the Kings game on the way home, no?

Ill be in Sac for about 4 days so ill have some time to maneuver. As for night life some sophisticated club like dance spot where we can enjoy ourselves and just chill. Any suggestions

If you have 4 days, you can't go wrong with going to SF and maybe even Lake Tahoe, depending on the weather. Are you going to rent a car or just take taxis everywhere?

^ I was thinking Taxing would be less headache i.e finding parking, traffic, cost, but what do you suggest. I'm not opposed to renting a car though but as I said wanted to run away from the headache

Depends where you want to go in the 4 days. If you are just gonna stay in Sacramento, then just do the taxi. If you are going to SF, Lake Tahoe, Redding, etc or any of the other tourists areas, then you'll have to decide what the costs you want to spend. You can take public transportation from Sacramento to SF for about $80-100 per person, which might be cheaper than paying for a taxi to drive for 2 hours.

If you book early enough, you can get intercity bus tickets between Sac and SF for as low as a dollar on megabus.com. Their buses are pretty nice with wifi and stuff.
