Team assessment going into 2013 off-season

Post#1 » by dorkestra » Mon Apr 29, 2013 1:37 pm

I'm trying to get a better feel for the direction that Suns fan want to and expect to go in (I realize these may be different). Given Blanks' departure, it may be an opportunity to revitalize the franchise. Can you please correct me if any of my below general assessments are incorrect?

I'm also curious as to the fans' feelings about having both of the Morris twins. Is there any expectation that either player develops into a starter? And if not, is it redundant to have both players coming off your bench? Thanks in advance.

Assets:
Goran Dragic/Kendall Marshall
P.J. Tucker
Jared Dudley
Luis Scola/Channing Frye/Markeiff Morris/Marcus Morris
Marcin Gortat

Liabilities:
Michael Beasley
Shannon Brown

Will not be re-signed: Wesley Johnson
Potentially re-signed: Jermaine O'Neal
Likely to be traded: Luis Scola

Add Marcin Gortat to the "likely to be traded" list. And Wesley Johnson will almost definitely be re-signed.

I would trade Scola, Gortat and Dragic. Get young dudes with upside, The team will be very bad in a very good year to be very bad.

Dragic played like an All-Star guard in the second half of the season, so I don't know what you're expecting from him. We're not going to be able to do better than him, and he was a great leader, so I say we keep him as the future point guard. He's one of the only current Suns worth keeping for several more years.

Dragic is probably the only player I would keep on this roster. I think he's young, proven talent and on a good long term deal. Obviously we can't get rid of everyone and just bring in a new team to put around Dragic, so I'll be fine with keeping Dudley, Tucker and O'Neal.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Any thoughts about the Morris twins? Any starter potential in either of them?

No. Markieff MIGHT develop into a solid bench big. Marcus is useless.

And Brown is going to be released, his contract is not fully guaranteed.

I don't really want Frye as part of our long-term unless he is coming off of the bench playing 10-20 minutes. I really like the dude but he just had some bad-streaks that caused us some losses and drove me nuts. He is too confident in his 3/jump shooting.

I think Markeiff has starter potential. But he'd need to be on another team (proper coaching and development of big guys). Like EC and Rolo, he'll play better elsewhere.

Markief had some good games near the end of the season, but not enough to assess. Marcus started out good, and then seemed like he couldn't shoot.

But it would be good to see them with a full training camp, under a real head coach.
