Lowe (Grantland) on NBA Wings (ideas for off-season targets)

Zach Lowe writes a nice piece on wings whose skills are hot commodities. These are some of the guys the Lakers should be targeting (some more realistic than others):

Nice part about Ariza in there. He forgot mentioning Francisco Garcia, Chase Budinger in that group.

The wing positions are arguably our biggest need....we need at least 2 solid players at SF(with MWP likely gone) and even a good SG if Kobe can't go from the start(and even if he can,Meeks has been underwhelming and an upgrade would be welcomed)

Target a starting SF from a trade(doubt we'll get a solid starter with just 3 mil from the MMLE) and use the MMLE for a reserve

Our best bet is Gasol......love the guy and he played very well down the line, but if we can get 2 or 3 good role players for him I want to pull the trigger and trade him

We desperately need depth,as this season clearly showed.....if we can get it only by sacrificing star power,so be it

just get perimeter players that can defend even if they can't create their own shots.

They need to at least be able to shoot off the catch if nothing else. Defenses don't pay attention to non-shooting role players anymore.

we could use a bruce bowen type. it's a shame Metta could never develop a consistant corner 3 (or consistant 3 from anywhere)

Nice article but not an ounce of reality in it for us. All the guys mentioned are in that 6-7-8 mil range, meaning we can't afford any of them unless a trade is worked out. Maybe we could land Martell Webster, in the right system he could shine. It's a reason he struggle in Washington, they have no double team threat. He's one of those shooters who can blaze off the double when playing with that type of player.

The other wing has to be a defender, if Mitch is already doing his homework he'd target Francisco Garcia. What he's doing to Durant is beautiful to watch. Remember our team has to be built to shut off one of the heads to OKC. Plus Kobe and Garcia seem kinda cool with each other.

what do u think pau's giant 19 mil expiring is for? there'll be options out there

nene + ariza for pau/MWP sound good? we eat nene's long contract for pau's expiring and swap ariza for MWP?

washington might want more, but we can work out the minor details after LA and washingotn agree to a framework

You can't really be thinking of ruining our 2014 FA plan for Nene' and Ariza.

Prior to the new CBA I think this would be true, but I think the current realities are that no one is going to want to tie 20M up in a single player unless it's their franchise guy...
Taking on Paus expiring would be great for a team that had a guy in that price range for multiple seasons that they didn't want to pay, but that guy would likely suck, and we wouldn't want him.
For us, we'd be looking for multiple players that could fill various roles, but I just don't think there are too many teams out there that want to replace multiple smaller bad contracts for one enormous expiring. It's going to have to be a pretty special situation, and might even require multiple teams to make it work.
The flip side is, like others have said, we aren't in a position to take back any bad contracts... And unless it's a really significant player, we aren't going to want to limit our 2014 flexibility...

All this adds up to amnestying Pau to me. I think we'll try to trade him, and our best bet might be to try to get some draft picks for him... But I'm thinking that if he's still a laker after the dust settles from the draft, he may be our amnesty target.

Any chance we can get Iggy? Don't know much about the CBA and not educated what the Lakers can affford these days. But is there any deal out there where he could end up at Staples in the PG come October?

Pass on your idea Aki, Nene's deal is just handcuffs.

Expiring for expiring would just be Pierce for Pau. Both teams get what they need, Boston gets size to go next to KG. LA gets a wing and can start Metta at 4 which he was half the season anyhow (and he defended better than Pau). LA also shaves some off the tax bill without hurting their 2014 plan. Boston also gives the starting 3 role to green. If it doesn't work out, oh well it all comes to an end the next summer or at the deadline.

I would actually be okay w/ that

If the Lakers are gonna commit to any 2015 salary, they need to make sure it gets them to contendership. I think you have to wait until Kobe is back at 100% and plays a month or so before making such a move.

the thing with nene is he's still quite tradeable at 13 mil per.

at the very least, its a 6.3 mil off the LT this season, which equates to ~18.XX mil in LT savings and it still leaves us with sufficient room to land lebron (since we can waive nash's expiring and take the cap hit over 3 years)

Thing with nene is he stays hurt. If he wasnt the type to stay hurt, he would be a fine PF in a 2 for 1 deal with Ariza
