I would love to have Hill at some position within the front office or even an assistant coach but this is not the right move. Just pick McDonnough already and let him start to get to work. We only have two more weeks until the lottery selection.

+1

Hill brings the PR swoon they're after, McDonnough brings the NBA GM brain...

As shawnbronald said, bring both in

McDonut FTW!

The funny thing is that all of these reports assume that Grant would want to come back here anyways. He's gonna have plenty of other offers.

That's true, but I get the feeling Grant really does love Phoenix (the Suns and the community). Truth be told, he never wanted to leave. His desire was to retire as a member of the Suns and then become a coach or front office guy here. There was some sort of miscommunication between he and Babby and that's why he left to go to Los Angeles. He and Babby go way back and I believe cooler heads will prevail and they'll patch things up. Ultimately, I think Grant will find his way back to Phoenix, but I don't know in what role and at what time.

Does Hill want front office or coaching?

He could easily be that token old, wise player who moves into Assistant then coaching duties

But I could see him in a front office role for some reason...scout maybe?

If it's McDonough I'll be STOKED. Hopefully the next Presti...And he'll be able to do something significant immediately if he chooses to

I agree completely, but my main concern is whether or not Sarver/Babby will actually give him enough control to do so. I'm extremely concerned that Sarver will continue signing players on his own and Babby will question decisions by McDonough to the point they settle on lesser options. They need to hand him the reigns and let him do his thing. What's the worst that can happen..... we become a horrible team and looked upon negatively by the rest of the league? No... that's already the case. We can only go up from here, so let McDonough have complete control and see how it goes.

It reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where George decides to do the opposite of his usual decisions. "If every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right." If Sarver and Babby do the complete opposite of what they've done the past 3+ years, then the result will undoubtedly be positive.

.... but I think we all knew this already. Any smart GM, in their right mind, would never have even considered Hunter as head coach.

Definitely a good day if it is McDonut. I would've been okay with Weltman but knowing McDonut will be our guy is even better. Also wouldn't mind giving Hill a shot as an assistant here if he retires. No better place to give him a chance to build his coaching credentials.

I dont think there is one person on this planet that actually thought Hunter would be back as coach. In fact it scares me that that was an actual option, I clinched a little when I read that!!

Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA 1m

With hiring of Boston's McDonough, Suns direction is clear: No more stopgap short-term free agents, rebuild through multiple picks in draft.

Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA 10m

First job for McDonough in Phoenix will be to hire a coach: Expect him to find a bright, young assistant to grow with a full-blown rebuild.

The two things here that come to mind:

1. Hire someone like Brian Shaw
2. Trade guys like Gortat and Dudley

From the Wiretap:
David Joerger, currently an assistant coach under Lionel Hollins with the Memphis Grizzlies, is considered one of the top candidates for head coaching jobs in the future.

Joerger's assent to the NBA began in the IBA, CBA and D-League.

“He loves the craft,” said one NBA general manager. “Look what he’s done with [the Memphis] defense. He’s got Thibodeau’s thing for defense, but he’s a lot more likable than Thibs.”

Joerger is known for having a great understanding of what each player on a roster can and cannot do, maximizing their strengths.

I don't know anything about the dude, but if that's true, it sounds like someone the Suns should definitely consider. Just sucks that he wouldn't be able to be interviewed till the Grizzlies season ends.

I bet your still "SMFH"ing over there huh? Looks like even our FO realized that it was pointless to hire a bum from a mediocre franchise. Too bad about your boy Weltman

My boy? LOL. I'm actually still SMFHing, just at this post of yours and not the other one.

How ridiculous. I've wanted McDonough from the moment he was first mentioned.

Note the date. How does it feel getting clowned, bro? Maybe next time you shouldn't act like a jabroni, running your mouth like you know what my opinion is.

Return to Phoenix Suns
