Brian Shaw (Merged)

Post#1 » by RiversideClips » Wed May 22, 2013 2:40 am

Looking for a young Coach, who has experience as a player and has been a #1 Asst. for both the Lakers & the Pacers; shouldn't the Clips be looking at interviewing Brian Shaw?

Idk who I want. He would be ok. I prefer Jerry Sloan #1. Then maybe mallone. I think L Hollins stays in Mem and SVG doesn't coach and Phil says FU DTS

I have no clue about Shaw's ability to teach defense, and isn't he a triangle guy? Triangle isn't necessarily the best offense to maximize this team. If he's supposed to be a good defensive coach and has plans for how to maximize the offense whether using the triangle or not, he's good.

Team doesn't specifically need to be looking for a young coach though

his offensive principles just won't mesh well with this team.

I'd rather have Budenholzer... He's got 16 years of experience behind a CONSISTENTLY WINNING coach.

i appreciate the answers, just trying to see if there is a diamond in the rough. Budenholzer wouldn't be too bad, but nobody knows him; Shaw has a rep in L.A..

nobody knew vogel neither i bet... it's just a name. you can't undermine 16 years behind one of the best NBA coaches still out there because of a name.

first, he is a former laker who have no ties to the clippers unlike barnes and odom who started their careers here. do not want a laker trash.

secondly, we have CP3. triangle disciple won't maximize chris' abilities.

lastly, phil jackson's top assistants don't seem to pan out as HCs in this league unlike Pop's assistants or JVG's assistants. i think that's because phil wasn't about Xs and Os as tex winter handled that for him, but a charisma guy who managed his players' mental approach to the game. you can't translate charisma to your assistants let alone to your own children. i can't see brian shaw having any better luck than kirt rambis, and rambis was a disaster.

VDN was Pop's Assistant and he has had his contract run out twice in the past 3 years.
I want you guys to tell me who we should be looking at like Budenholzer , there has to be a great top Asst. Coach that Paul respects & likes or we try to lure Monty from the Pelicans or go after another respected (former) Head Coach.
I like what you guys are saying, I don't think Shaw is the answer, but I think we need to have a Coach in place by the middle of June or before.

We don't have the pieces for the triangle offense, starting with a ball dominant pure PG in Chris Paul. Shaw will get his opportunity some where but for the Clippers he is a square peg in a round hole.

Brain Shaw is at least in the mix now. Sure Voegel is the main architect behind the Pacers success, but Shaw had some role ther..could he be the next Thibedau

true, but it was always impossible to ahve a dominant PG in the traingel because the biggest pieces phil had were always at different positions Shaq=center, Kobe=shooting guard, MJ=primarily shooting guard, somtimes SF, sometimes PG. so its easy to say the triangle isnt made for a dominant PG but phil never had a guy like magic johnson, chris paul etc. you dont know until its been tried, the big question is do we want to gamble on that...i sure as hell dont have the answer as towhether a dominant PG can thrive in the triangel, but to assume that based on phils previus rosters doesnt tell the whole stiry because all his dominant players were at different positions

aaahhh.... the entire premise of triangle is taking the ball out of a ball dominant PG and in the hands of your high post player, then into whomever is open in perimeter or a cutter. it worked well for michael and kobe because they often were able to play the high post themselves or be that cutter, or tall enough to shoot over defenders when the ball was kicked back out to him. CP3 is a good shooter, but not a lights out shooter. he isn't tall enough to shoot a challenged long jumper over a defender. CP3 can drive in and be effective, but he isn't a dominant slasher to make his living doing that. He surely isn't big enough to be an efficient high post player at all.

if shaw comes, i would welcome his defensive abilities, but he'd better dump that triangle and adapt a motion offense or VDAA's style, aka CP3 offense. Vinny's offense was laughable at times but his biggest downfall was his inability to coach up the perimeter defense and low post defense without giving up free throws. if shaw can improve on those two areas, i can live with Vinny's style offense 2.0.

it' just not very smart to implement an offensive system that doesn't suit your unquestioned best player, ala greg knapp's zone scheme versus power scheme back darren mcfadden.

As I've said for a few days now, I think the head coach will end up being Byron Scott, which really isn't a bad option all things considered.
