I would love to see him here. I would just hate if we sign him and he rides the bench the whole way.

Re: Greg Oden to Miami?
If some dumb GM is willing to throw the money at Oden I REALLY don't see him coming to Miami for a chance at a ring. I'm sure he's about getting PAID first and foremost being out of the game for so long. In his position you don't really pass that up...but we'll see.

I heard on Mike and Mike talks of oden returning two weeks ago. The two of them believe he will be offered pretty good money. I don't know exactly how much they were thinking but I wouldn't doubt if somebody shelled out 6-8 mil to keep him out of Miami.

Re: Greg Oden to Miami?
WD wrote:Oden’s agent, Mike Conley, told FOX Sports Florida by phone Friday that the free-agent center remains very interested in signing with the Heat this summer and the feeling is mutual. Conley expects to talk with Heat president Pat Riley when free agency begins July 1 about the 7-foot Oden, the 2007 No. 1 draft pick who hasn’t played in the NBA since December 2009 due to knee problems.
“The Heat need some size, that’s not a secret,” Conley said. “Whether it’s in a backup role or whatever, he could help them. I know they’re interested in him and he’s interested in them.”
WD-going to monitor this, he'll have to resist the "cock block" offers from our competitors - make an offer July 1, 2013 - he takes it...done....
"The Cleveland Cavaliers are still considered the favorites to land Oden (he has been working out and taking classes at The Ohio State University). But the Heat would certainly have a role for him. There is a natural fit. And as a 25 year old, there are certain perks to living in South Beach."
It weird that his agent would say "Whether it's in a backup role or whatever"
I still want Oden but you would think if his rehab was going better his agent would be more confident than that.

Unless the Cavs offer that multi-year guaranteed deal. Riley is good but if the other guy is offering a lot more money he usually loses out (obviously not his fault)

Well yeah, there's that. But we won't speak of this sobering of all sobering scenarios again. I prefer we stick with the Riley as master closer narrative.

Oden with his injury history. Would be a fool not to take the most guaranteed money he is offered, and i'm sure his agent will be letting him know that every chance he gets. Most likely just using miami like every other free agent.

The worst was when Lebron, Bosh, Battier and Ray Allen "used" Miami as free agents. Oh and Mike Miller too.

Point still stands, more players will use miami then sign with us, and it's not very smart for one of the most injured players in history to pass on guaranteed money.

Bring Greg Oden home, Riley!
For a long time it gave me nightmares, witnessing an injustice like that. It’s a constant reminder of just how unfair this world can be.I can still hear them taunting him, Silly Rabbit tricks are for kids.I mean why couldn’t they just give him some cereal?

If the opportunity isn't in Cleveland for minutes, he might miss out of more money in the long run by signing there. If he signs with Miami for the say the minimum this year, and is able to play 20-25 minutes at 10+8, he's going to be able to sign a better deal for more money than he would coming off DNP's for Cleveland who already have a plethora of bigs.

He can't turn down money for us. The guy never knows what's going to be his last contract.
But I find it really hard to believe he's going to get offered more than the MMLE. There seem to be some vibes that teams are willing to spend real money on him, but I'll believe it when I see it. Anyone who gives him 5+ mil is going to risk looking like a moron if he blows out a knee again.

other than a handful of teams who can always attract FA's, the majority of GMs in the league are desperate. they will always take a chance on spending money on a potential impact player, especially someone with size. they kno they have no shot of getting elite FA's to come to their team
if his knee checks out and he shows the slightest bit of athleticism in workouts, he's def going to get more money than miami can give him

I dunno. We'll see. I guess nothing would shock me, but this is a guy that hasn't proven anything on an NBA level yet, has had like 3 ACL tears, and hasn't been in the league in over a year. We're not even talking Brandon Roy, who had screwed up knees but had proven he could be a great player when healthy.

Actually the little bit that Oden has played has shown that he is an elite rebounder, defender, and an efficient scorer. He has great instincts as a big man.
If he comes down to Miami, then I'll know that he is serious about trying to make a comeback. Because we have a pedigree with bringing guys like this back into the NBA. And his minutes will be kept down no matter how good he plays--so we'll do everything possible to get him through the year--similar to Curry.
Also if he works hard enough, and shows something--Riley might give him a job for after basketball. Which if his knees go is something he could use.

That said, if Cleveland offer him a multi-year guaranteed deal close to the MLE--you go take that deal and whatever happens to your knees happens--you can live the rest of your life on that contract if you manage it right.
But at the same time, it's hard to know what Oden's goals are right now. He may really really just want to play basketball and have a career. It may not be about the money at this point. I mean you think about what he was, and what's been taken away from him--dude may just want to give himself the best chance possible to have a career.
Plus the culture down here is one of the best in the league.
I think if he meets with Riley the deal is pretty much done. Riley can sell anybody anything.

Agreed but why would they offer that?

He's already got enough enough to live the rest of his life if he manages it properly. He got a total of $23M in salary from the Blazers plus whatever he picked up in endorsement money. I know he signed a deal with Nike prior to being drafted.
That doesn't mean money isn't the top priority, of course, But we aren't talking Norris Cole rookie contract net worth either. If he's looking at this next season as a paid rehab/career re-starter, Riley tossing out names like Ike Austin and Miami's recent record of keeping everyone but Wade healthy could get it done. We're the only team that had a guy with a new kidney make a comeback.

Probably blew right through that. Didn't Oden have a alcohol problem?
I still say he's about getting PAID but hopefully I'm wrong...would be a nice pickup/experiment.
