Yeah, if I was a Pelican fan, I'd feel like Charlie Brown after Lucy pulled the ball away. For 2 minutes, they had Davis and Noel together. I don't know if it would have worked out perfectly, but I sure would have liked to see them try. In those 2 minutes, I'd have already ordered my French Quarter block party t-shirts.

Re: Who Had the Best 2013 Draft?
I should comment on my own question....
I thought the Sixers new GM Sam Hinckle had a *great* draft, an unbelievable draft in fact. Holiday had an $11m/year guaranteed contract for 4 years going forward. He is if anything a slightly above average PG. In return for him, he got the player most people had projected #1 this year.
He got a big, athletic and quick PG whose only weakness is jump-shooting -- does that remind you of anybody?
Shooting is easiest NBA skill to teach
In addition, in return for his #35 pick, Glen Rice Jr., he got a guy most people projected at least as high, Nate Wolters*, to take some more of those lost PG minutes -- plus the leading rebounder among NCAA PFs in Kazemi.
Oh.. and he also got a top-3 protected pick in next year's draft!
That's a wow in my book. Right up there w/ Orlando's draft last year -- another great piece of work by a new and very young GM.
* Make that Pierre Jackson? Looks like a swap of 38 and 42 was part of the trade.

Re: Who Had the Best 2013 Draft?
I thought Dallas too had an outstanding draft (tho on a lower level of players). For the #13 (Olynyk), they got Shane Larkin, Mike Muscala and 2 future round 2 picks. They also off-loaded Jared Cunningham's 3 more guaranteed years in the deal (he managed to earn 27 minutes of floor-time last year).
They only have 8 guys under contract, yet at the same time they're trying to attract Howard. For next year they have nobody -- not even one player! -- under contract right now. Larkin will be their only guaranteed contract. "Dwight -- we're going to rebuild entirely around you!"

OKC, but a better question for this particular year would be who had the worst draft? I'll take Charlotte.

Wolters was traded to Milwaukee for Ricky Ledo and a future 2nd.
MCW's athleticism isn't in the same universe as Wall's. Just because a PG is tall and has trouble shooting, you ought to resist the temptation to compare him to Wall. MCW is essentially Evan Turner. Evan Turner is not John Wall.

So, Philly has more Evan Turners than anyone in the league in a figurative sense?
What helps more, that or us leading the league in guys named Trevor in a literal sense?

Kings...
tyreke and ben is like wall and beal...except they got cousins...
Now the kings can trade isiah and all they other pgs for some vets
Jazz
Trey burke is going to look lik lillard did last year, maybe even better
Wolves
Depth...if shabazz can becomd the star, theyll have a nice roster to make noise,
With the pg depth and also bein under the tax and havin bit of $$$ they might be able to swing an oj mayo
Rubio
Mayo
Shabazz
Love
Deing
Barea
Shved
Kirilenko
Dwill
Pekovic??
The wizards did okay, but they shouldve traded the pick to the wolves for williams and again to the jazz and came out the draft with
Williams
Shabazz
Dieng
Solves all our problems, heads us into the future with
Wall
Beal
Shabazz - rudy gay at best...nick young at worst
Williams
Dieng - ibaka like player...better offense
And
2nd rd pg
Webster
Ariz
Nene
Okafor
Off the bench til we get rid of them

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

Re: Who Had the Best 2013 Draft?
Utah made an interesting move getting Burke. Giving up Shabbazz and Dieng with what they have to get Burke was worth it.
Burke
Alex Burks
Gordon Hayward
Favors
Kanter
Thats a decent young core all on cheap contracts.
They have cap space to do what they want. They can keep some vets or make a splash in FA
PORT grabbing CJM was a nice move.
Orl getting VO was good but they would have done better to get Burke. Unless they wanted to suck another year for next years draft. Nelson is leading them no where.
CHA would have done better with VO but with him gone, getting Zeller was smart.
McLemore was a good pick by SAC but a bad place to land for McLemore. Going to be harder for him to be good on that team.
What players will help their teams win the most. I say Otto, Burke and CJM

I wouldn't compare MCW to Wall, and if you reread my post you'll see that I didn't -- I made a little joke is what I did.
To be sure the joke wouldn't be misunderstood I added a little smiley.

Re: Who Had the Best 2013 Draft?
As usual, SA had an effective draft with only #28 and #58, getting a kid w/ tremendous potential (Livio J-C) and Deshaun Thomas who led the toughest conference in the NCAA in scoring.

What's a good site to follow (with draft night trades and related moves) where everyone landed? I'm having a hard time following who ended up where.

Re: Who Had the Best 2013 Draft?
Why? Kings are in dire need of players, who play off the ball. That's why all the pieces from Robinson trade looked good on offensive end. Malone will make them play unselfish and share the ball. Expect Kings to unload quite a few of their guards, so McLemore will get a lot of minutes, and he will have the ball delivered for catch-and-shoot. Don't think he'll get enough shots to challenge for Roy, but 14p+4r+1.5a with good efficiency and 1st rookie team is a reasonable projection.hands11 wrote:Utah made an interesting move getting Burke. Re: Who Had the Best 2013 Draft?
There are two levels of evaluation a draft. One is at about the 3/4 mark of the first year. That's for players who you know had skills that would instantly translate who landed on teams where they fit.
The second rating is for projects. That takes 3-5 years to figure out.
Which is why I don't like drafting projects. By the time you figure out if they will be good, they are on their second contract. Just not worth it unless you draft and stash so they develop on someone elses dime and time.
Sorry, but McLemore should have gone before Noel. Same with Burke and CJM, which is where he ended up, with the 11th picking Sixers who probably had a deal set up before he was picked by the Pelicans. Sixes could have probably got him at 11 if they would have just waited.

You might be right, but they look like they're in rebuild mode, and so they're probably looking 2-3 years down the road for pieces to start to come together. They got an additional 1st next year in the trade (and they picked up a few 2014 2nds as well), and maybe they were actually looking to unload Holiday's contract anyway.
Can't say for sure they did a good job, but those moves have the potential to make for a great draft. Same with the Hawks, but you're right, it's frequently hard to tell if it's a great draft the day after the draft. Rice could be a steal, or he could get arrested for stealing. And then someone will say, "Told ya so!"
@closg00, thanks for that site. That clarified a maze of moves.
