We could have come out of this offseason with Nerlens Noel, Martell Webster and Nate Robinson. Our roster would have been in pretty good shape for the near term and long term. Instead, we get Porter, Webster and Maynor. Redundant at the wings, lousy at backup PG, and we have not addressed our future frontcourt.

This.

No, we could not have had Nate Robinson. Just because he was got for cheap does not mean he would have come cheap to here. Or come at all. Denver won almost 60 games last year. Highly likely that had we landed him, it would have cost 5-6 million per. And then there would have been the predictable ****.

Noel = intriguing. But huge injury concerns and no guarantee he'll be better than Porter.

Duplication on the wings: that sounds like a problem but in today's NBA you need good wing play. We should be good there with Ariza and Webster and Beal and Porter and Temple and Rice Jr. That's more depth at the 2-3 than I can remember this team having since the late '70s.

Agree that a Noel pick wouldn't have been all roses. Even with Noel on the roster, there still would have been a frontcourt depth issue for the upcoming season since he would miss a significant portion of the season rehabbing. IMO he wouldn't have been expected to contribute much even when healthy since he'd be a rail thin rookie with no offensive skill coming off a major injury. I understand the position that it could be a risk worth taking based on potential future returns, but I don't have any regrets about the pick.

Exactly.

As for Nate Rob.

Did he make noise like he wanted to play for us ? Would he have picked the Wizards over Denver ?

If we had the bi annual exception and didn't sign Maynor to it, he might have sign with us.

Denver looks a bit crowded with their PG position. Andre Miller may get traded, they have Lawson..

And Porter (who is a rail thin rookie) is going to contribute considering Ariza and Webster are in front of him? If the Wiz wanted to drafted a ready made contributor, they should have drafted Zeller.

Otto was picked to help this year if he can, but mostly it was a move to help next year when Trevor A is gone.

He gets one year of training where the pressure is lower then it was for Wall or Beal. Then the lights go on.

There were several moves that would have made sense. Zeller, CJM, etc. This one was a decent risk reward move that actually does show some longer term planning.

I think they want to add more experience to the PF/C using cap space and/or trading assets. Thats why they didn't go Zeller, Len, or Noel. Otto has a decent skill set to compliment Wall and Beal and he has the right personality to blend with them to made a young 3 core.

Wall and Beal are young. Between Webster and Otto you have mid aged and young. I think they want to add a 26, 27 year old vet(s) at PF or C to balance out the 30 year old vets, Nene and Okafor.

So maybe they do have a formula in mind for that they want.

Sure he might have. Lots of things might happen.

I asked, Did he make noise like he wanted to play for us ?

Blair has made noise that he does. Kanter said he wanted to play here. Webster said he wanted to be a Wizard. Did Nate say anything about the Wizards ? Did he even mention us on a list of teams he would be interested in ?

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

I would feel a lot better about the roster if Ariza was swapped for a similar big. Unless a deal is made, it looks like the Wizards must be relying on Booker being healthy and Seraphin being productive. I think those a very faulty assumptions. Or even worse would be expecting anything significant from Vesely or Singleton. I could(and hope I am) wrong on those two, but I wouldn't say the likelihood is high enough to build a team around how you wish some of the young players would produce.

Thinking it would take a LOT more than that. The Jazz let Millsap and Jefferson walk free just for Derrick Favors and Kanter.

Seraphin, Vesely and a 2nd might get you Ian Clark.

I think Kanter said something to that effect back before he was drafted, not any time recently.

And, uh ... no comment on the trade proposal.

Well, the summer isn't over just yet and moves can be made up until the trade deadline.

Hey, if you want player development, you have to give these players some window to step up.

They played two years ago when the team sucked. Now they added vets to help Wall and Beal so last season they had the bar really raised on them. This is their first off season to adjust and we are early in the off season. All we got was some summer ball for Ves and Singleton. We haven't seen or heard anything about Kevin or Booker.

All that said, I don't see Ves, Kevin or Singleton getting good enough quick enough to be the level of player I would like to see coming off the bench. I could see one or more doing well enough to give us some confidence that they are getting better but that's the baseline of what they need to prove. Ultimately, we need them to show they are legit reliable quality bench players that belong on a good team. That a tier above what any of them can probably prove over the summer.

Kevin and Ves would really have to beast in Uro ball to give us that kind of a feeling. For Kevin, he will need to grab a of boards and make more moves toward the basket where he draws fouls.

With most of their scoring coming from Wall, Beal and Webster and Wall in range to become as beast where he get 10 FTA a game, they might have a little more time to evaluate those other players because Wall should be able to carry the team. And with Maynor as the back up PG, he should be able to help those players get easier looks.

Its not ideal or a finished puzzle, but for where they are in the rebuild, they could just go into the season with all 4 of them and see how they do. It makes sense as an option. But there are other viable options as well.

The Wizards aren't in the building stage of a Brooklyn or Houston just yet.

Based on reports there was significant interest on both sides and Denver/Washington were the two teams he was mulling over with Denver being the front runner.

It'd be great to get Kanter in exchange for Vesely and Seraphin. Heck, I'd be happy to get the cap room they represent for the two of them.

Or I would be if we had a good GM.

But Kanter isn't on the market, so what's the point of this speculation?

I know I heard the rumor but I never saw anything that said Nate was interested.

It seemed that Utah went out of their way to clear a path for Kanter to step into a prominent role this offseason. It would screw majorly with their long-term plans if Kanter leaves. If they do agree, tank hard for Wiggins, I'm sure they'll at least ask for a 2014 (settle for a 2015) pick out of any deal we offer.

If Ariza continues to shoot the 3 ball well this upcoming year, and the Wizards win some games - like +500, I think its possible we may be able to make a nice trade at the deadline. GMs need to see a pattern of shooting from Ariza though to justify that move. If he's seen as a solid 3 & D, this would make sense for someone stocked at the big position, but perhaps light at the wing due to injury or whatnot.

So according to your logic, the only players the Wizards can get are the ones Ernie actually signs?

I didn't know we were basing possible free agent options based on the preponderance of the evidence regarding their actual interest.

Every player available is a POTENTIAL get. You don't know whether you can get them until you've talked with them and made an offer. You can't make a competitive offer if you squander your salary cap assets on lesser players.

Maybe Darren Collison was hellbent and determined to play for the Clippers. But, maybe he would have taken double the money to play in Washington.
