Stevens was game... but GGG was too much. You just felt that bad things were going to happen to him. I am glad when they stopped the fight. GGG isn't a perfect fighter but he is scary in the sense that he lets his hands go all the time and every punch has real pop. He can KO with each type of punch.

Well if you are going to fight.... you don't come to lose. I am pretty sure they and Stevens believed they were going to win because he had one punch KO power and GGG isn't exactly hard to hit. It was their first big break since their implosion and snoozefest vs Dirrell. It isn't like he performed bad... he just lost to what many people consider the best fighter in the division and a P4P guy. No shame in that...

Holy ****! This one was a definite FOTY candidate, a very strong one at that. Grueling fight with a lot of bombs thrown with bad intentions.
Spoiler:
On tonight's HBO...Stevens did better than I thought but GGG was just on a different level. Those body shots and power shots really wore down Stevens by the middle of the 8th round, it was pretty clear to me that the fight wasn't going to last much longer. Seemed to be an agreement between the corner and ref to stop it after the 8th, correct move.
The HW fight was really good. Mike Perez showed impressive offensive skill and a quality chin as Abdulsalamov landed some good shots that Perez shook off quite well. Of course there were times Perez was stung but I felt he was never in any real danger. Perez made a mess of Mago's face, looked like he broke his cheekbone or jaw early in the fight. Ton of courage from Mago to continue to make the best of a crap situation.

Re: Boxing Thread 4.0
Golovkin's offensive technique is so impressive that it doesn't really matter that his defense is suspect. The thing that separates him from from someone like Matthysse(another reputable hard puncher in the sport) is that he actually comes in with a game plan to attack his opponent's body. Which is pretty much a lost art in boxing these days. He also has a really good stiff jab to go along with those devastating hooks. He's a methodical and precise puncher that doesn't throw wildly. He cuts off the ring really well and has a world class chin to boot. A lot of those punches he took from Stevens would have knocked out or at least knocked down 90 percent of the boxers in his division. He really is a joy to watch in the ring.
That being said Stevens acquitted himself well in the ring last night. Based off last night's performance I think HBO will put him in another fight. I could see him giving the second tier middle weights a lot of trouble. Guys like Macklin, Rosado, Murray, Geale, Sturm and Barker.

Sigh...
That's why weight classes exist. I know Mayweather has experience fighting at 154, but that doesn't mean he should be fighting someone like GGG at 154. The guy is a natural welter weight and would be fighting a guy that has the punching power to put down super middle weights and light heavy weights. Quite frankly, asking Mayweather to fight GGG would be asking too much of him. Unlike Canelo(who's not that big of junior middle), the physical advantages would be too much for Mayweather to handle.

Not everyone is Manny Pacquiao. There's a reason why you don't see that many boxers move up in weight the way he has. Especially that quickly. He's more of an anomaly, not the norm.
Again, that's why there are weight classes in the sport. I wish some of you would realize that. Sorry but Mayweather fighting at 154 or 160 against GGG would be ridiculous.

After a brutal bout with Mike Perez, Magomed Abdusalamov is in a medically induced coma due to a blood clot discovered after the fight.
When Magomed Abdusalamov and Mike Perez battled in the HBO opener last night, it drew very positive reviews from the fans, media and HBO broadcast crew. The two heavyweight prospects went all out, bombing each other with power punches over the ten round battle. Perez came out on the winning end of the fight to improve to 20-0 but "Mago" had nothing to be ashamed of, dropping to to 18-1.
Mago's toughness and ability to keep coming forward through the full fight may have cost him in a very serious way, however. As Boxing Scene is confirming reports that Abdusalamov is in a medically induced coma:
Earlier today, BoxingScene.com reported that during the fight Magomed broke his left hand, broke his nose and he was taken to a local hospital where a small blood clot was discovered on the brain.
Late last night, Magomed's manager, Boris Grinberg, told BoxingScene the fighter was doing fine after doctors tended to his injuires. But a few hours later the boxer began to complain of bad headaches and was feeling ill. Doctors at Roosevelt Hospital placed him in a medically induced coma to reduce the possibility of any serious complications stemming from the blood clot.
The superficial injuries (broken nose and facial swelling) were of major concern in Mago's corner during the fight as the fighter asked his corner repeatedly about them.
But the blood clot is obviously the much bigger concern now. There should be updates at some point Monday on his condition.
And in the coming days expect to see much debate over the corner's decision to not stop the fight sometime in the late mid-rounds.

Damn. These are stories that fans rarely read or hear about. A boxer named Frankie Leal died a couple of weeks ago after a fight due to the brain trauma he received from all the punchers he took. Now this.
This is why I can't really sh*t on boxers anymore for quitting during fights. It takes a tough SOB to step into the ring and fight for a living.

The thing is that usually boxing deaths happen at the lower weight classes in other countries... you know the weight classes most of us were when we were in middle school or if you were really skinny in high school.
This is a big deal... a legit heavyweight on national TV in a coma. The thing is that in the very first round he felt something wrong and kept fighting for 9 more rounds.

Hadn't heard until this tweet from Rafael that he had to have surgery? Hope he's able to make a full recovery.

Re: Boxing Thread 4.0
GGG drew 1.5 million viewers for his fight against Stevens on HBO. His fight against Macklin did 1.1 million. Remember, this is the same guy that most fans hadn't heard about a little over a year ago. Third highest ratings of the year behind Chavez Jr. and Cotto. Yup, it's safe to say that HBO has a legit future PPV stud on their hands.

i still feel bad about it... I said to myself what an amazing fight from both guys. There are no losers with how they performed.
I have been googling his name all day, read that he is trying to become a naturalized citizen, has wife and two kids. A honest hard working guy...
I am confident that he will be ok.... or at least that is what I am hoping for.
One of my coworkers was in a car crash several years ago... and had the exact same thing, a small brain bleed and was put into a coma and like 5 days later he had recovered enough to be taken off of the induced coma.
