Tottenham's Jermain Defoe agrees transfer to Toronto of MLS in January window

Jermain Defoe has agreed an incredible £90,000-a-week switch to MLS side FC Toronto.

The 31-year-old Tottenham and England striker has shattered the hopes of domestic clubs bidding to land him in January by accepting a stunning four-year offer to move to Canada.

Defoe said yes to the deal, also worth £6million to the White Hart Lane club, last week.

It is understood he will discuss the implications for his World Cup prospects with England boss Roy Hodgson.

But the transfer means the striker is set to end his career in Canada.

Defoe's former club West Ham and his old Spurs and Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, now at Championship promotion chasers Queens Park Rangers, had been leading the chase to tempt him away from White Hart Lane.

But, as we exclusively revealed a month ago, Toronto gazumped them all with an offer the marksman could not refuse.

He's going to be really good in the MLS. Great signing! I wonder what this means for Gilardino.

If they managed to get Defoe it will be quite a coup for Lewike and company, wow.

I like the Defoe signing - he still has lots left in the tank. Gilardino, on the other hand, has been a severe decline for a number of years and seems like a waste of resources.

He has been doing much better than people think lately. He did great on Bologna last year...made his way back onto the Italy team after a long absence and started a couple Confederation Cup games, and played well in a few WC qualifiers. He is the most dangerous player on Genoa and has 7 goals so far this season...I'd say in the MLS him and Defoe would be lethal and their styles would compliment each other quite well.
As long as they don't sign him to a super long contract, Gila should have 2-3 more solid years in him.

Longest serving TFC player in it's history has been traded.

Toronto FC announced Tuesday that it has acquired a conditional 2015 first-round MLS SuperDraft pick from Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for the rights to goalkeeper Stefan Frei.

“Parting with a player of Stefan’s caliber and character is always difficult, but as we move forward with our re-shaping of the Club, it is important that we have increased flexibility to make additional moves. This trade provides us with that flexibility,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “Stefan is a great player and an even better person who will always hold a special place in the Club’s history. We wish him all the best as he moves on to the next stage of his career.”

Frei, 27, recently completed his fifth season in Major League Soccer, all with Toronto FC. Frei was originally selected in the first round (13th overall) in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft from the University of California. Frei departs Toronto FC as the all-time club leader in matches played with 99 combined appearances from MLS league matches, Canadian Championship matches, and the CONCACAF Champions League. His all-time combined record stands at 30-38-29 (wins-losses-draws) with 28 clean sheets.

TFC had the chance to give him 100 games, but denied him that which pissed me off at the time.

Drake Helps Bring TFC a New DP

Post#800 » by ForeverTFC » Thu Dec 12, 2013 11:17 pm

I think this belongs here at it has impact on the Raptors.

Toronto FC have been going after several names this year in order to lure them into the fold. It seems that they have secured to signatures of Defoe and Gilberto, the latter a Brazilian striker.

Rumours came out the last couple of days that MLSE had brought Gilberto to town to see a Raptors game, and had also called in their Closer to talk to Gilberto about coming over.

Many wondered if Drake was just a gimmick to this organization, or if he would play a role. I think this shows what the organization had in mind when they hired him.
