Is Billy King the worst GM in league history?

Post#1 » by Hardcore6erFan » Fri Dec 6, 2013 2:04 am

With the Sixers all he did was trade future 1st round picks for mediocre aging role players. Now with the Nets he is doing the same thing.

No, but seriously, he's really REALLY bad. I get that the draft isn't the only way to build a roster, but you can't just brazenly ignore it. That's exactly what King does.

He ha pretty much the same roster building philosophy as Isiah Thomas had. That obviously worked out great for the Knicks.

Nope. Gotta be Colangelo. I think he was actually working in the interest of other teams throughout his entire tenure. Not sure how else to explain taking Terrence Ross so that the Pistons could draft Drummond.

He's the only GM in the league that has a blank check, and he can't even build a playoff team. If he's not the worst, then he's right up there. The Nets are doomed to be horrible for several years.

Looking at teams like the Nets and Knicks, then comparing how they were built to teams like the Blazers and Warriors, is there any more proof we need that you build a roster with substance over style? You don't need to fill your team with every huge name player you can get. It can work sometimes, but if you completely ignore how players fit together from a chemistry and playing style standpoint, that can really blow up in your face. And it's an expensive explosion at that.

Billy King is top 5. Ruined the Sixers for the last decade and now he ruined the Nets for this decade

Think Ted Stepien takes the cake on this one. Not only was he the cause for the rule that forbids teams to trade 1st rounders in consecutive years (since he gave so many away), he was actually banned from making moves without the league's approval. The league had to give Cleveland 1st rounders to compensate for Stepien's horrible GMing.

Some of Stepien's moves:

Traded the pick that became James Worthy to the Lakers for Don Ford

Traded four first rounders to Dallas, which eventually became Roy Tarpley, Sam Perkins, Detlef Schrempf and Derek Harper. He got Mike Bratz, Geoff Huston, Richard Washington and Jerome Whitehead back.

Hired and fired four coaches in one season.

Overpaid everyone. Tried to give Otis Birdsong a million a year for 5 years, which was more than Bird's and about Kareem's salary. Paid Scott Wedman 800k a year.

Fired his popular play by play guy for criticizing him on air.

That's pretty much Colangelo and Billy King on steroids with a little bit of Dolan mixed in.

Billy King is a douche and I'm happy to see all this blow up in his face.

He trashed AI during the end of his career for no reason. He wasted years of AI's prime by giving him a washed up Webber as his best player, then has the nerve to say that AI "never made his teammates better" when AI was breaking down later.

FU Billy King.

Drummond was considered to be a high risk pick. Most scouts/"experts" thought he would more than likely be a bust than a good player, probably due to his mediocre numbers in college despite his physical gifts, and also because of his horrific free throw shooting.

Nets are in the worst situation from the whole league. Colangelo ruined the Raptors for a few years in advance. Billy King ruined the Nets for a half, I'd say even a decade in advance.

For active GMs, it's between him and Chris Grant.
