OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: Cats Sign Chris Douglas-Roberts, Waive James Southerland

December 11, 2013

Charlotte Bobcats President of Basketball Operations Rod Higgins announced today that the team has signed free agent guard/forward Chris Douglas-Roberts and waived forward James Southerland. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Douglas-Roberts, who was playing with the NBA D-League Texas Legends, becomes the fifth D-League Gatorade Call-Up of the 2013-14 season.

A four-year NBA veteran, the 6-7 Douglas-Roberts has played in 161 career games for the Nets, Bucks and Mavericks. He has career averages of 7.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 20.3 minutes, while shooting .442 from the field (458-1036) and .833 from the free-throw line (265-318). Douglas-Roberts was selected by the Nets with the 40th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.

Douglas-Roberts has also played in 17 career NBA D-League games with the Legends, with averages of 21.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.5 steals in 36.9 minutes. He is shooting .487 from the field (113-232), .407 from beyond the three-point line (22-54) and .889 from the free-throw line (112-126) in D-League action.

In six games for the Legends this season, Douglas-Roberts has averaged 18.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 34.0 minutes, while shooting .472 from the field (34-72), .438 from beyond the three-point line (7-16) and .860 from the free-throw line (37-43).

Southerland signed with the Bobcats on September 5, 2013, after not being selected in the 2013 NBA Draft. He saw action in one regular-season game, playing three minutes.

Steve Clifford on CDR

“He has toughness and experience,” said Clifford, who worked with Douglas-Roberts as a Los Angeles Lakers assistant in training camp last fall. “We needed someone who could compete in a game as needed. He can do that.”

Obviously small sample size and he's probably not as good as those numbers suggest but he should be definitely be a threat to shoot. I doubt he's any worse than Taylor

His shot mechanics seems considerably smoother than JT's. Cats need more outside firepower so I like this guy already.

For those who aren't familiar with CDR. I can't wait until y'all start questioning and making jokes about how high his shoulders be as if his head is sunk into his neck

My Dad's family is all from Bellmawr. Spent a lot of time up around Camden/Philly as a kid. All my Irish peeps are up there.

I know I gave you my 2 cents, but I found a more insightful piece on RidiculousUpside that was written about 2-3 weeks ago explaining the nooks & crannies of his game and how it has improved since his D-League stints

There should no doubt in anyone's mind that the swingman will rise up as a star in the D-League rather quickly yet again this year. Last season, he proved capable of dominating the league with ease. Douglas-Roberts is as smart, savvy, and efficient as a scorer as they come. Determined to score the basketball, as a member of the Nets and Bucks in past seasons, CDR's previous troubles came from an evident indecisive nature with the rock once defenders came flocking. When his route to the basket was blocked, Douglas-Roberts had always seemed to reach a dead end.

But as even just a handful of games in the D-League proved last season, the 26 year old is no longer simply a one-dimension player. When combated with imposing defenders, CDR has the instincts necessary to find open teammates. What's more, now one to follow his own shot more aggressively, Douglas-Roberts emerged as one of the better rebounders in the minor league last season.

Now the question becomes, how much longer will Douglas-Roberts have to wait before he receives that coveted call? There have already been three NBADL to NBA call-ups thus far this year, and the minor league's season is only set to begin on Friday. Perhaps it's only a matter of time before a team in need of a shooting guard comes calling CDR's way when they realize he's the cream of the crop. Timing, along with the right situation or circumstances, can sometimes prove to be everything.

Perimeter defense was considered one of his stronger strengths entering the league after being an integral part of one of the best defenses in college basketball with Calipari at Memphis, but he caught a little bit of a bad rep & considered selfish with the Nets on his rookie year for gambling too much, looking for steals & transition points. He's definitely not a revolving door defensively, playing good off-ball defense and fundamental on-ball defense, while putting in the necessary effort, but he sometimes struggle with his lateral quickness to stay in front of faster wings

For what it's worth, here are his and his team's defensive rating when he's on/off the court.

Milwaukee Bucks (10-11, DefRtg 99.9) - CDR on 100.4, CDR off 99.8
New Jersey Nets (09-10, DefRtg 108.0) - CDR on 106.6, CDR off 109.1
New Jersey Nets (08-09, DefRtg 108.2) - CDR on 102.2, CDR off 109.2

Judging by stats it's rather good.

But I for one need to see him play first. The 10-11 Bucks and especially those two poor Nets team aren't exactly teams that I saw enough to tell how good CDR is on defense.

Cheers guys. Judging by the analysis, he doesn't lack the effort part. As long as he knows where to be defensively off the ball and his rotations are tight he should be alright then.

I can't wait to see him balling actually ! It's good to have another senior in the team rather than a rookie. We have already to many important young players to enter a gambling on another rookie like Southerland (even if I would have liked to see him playing more). We need someone who knows how things work in the NBA.

I hope he'll take Gordon's minutes.

Ship Gordon for the more we can get.

CDR might suit up, but there's no guarantee that Clifford will put him in the game come Friday, because I'm pretty sure the staff would want him to be acclimated with the system, or maybe they'll just simplify things for him in his spare minutes & wing it. We'll see

When JT is on his game, CDR is in no way better.

Same old problem as everyone else on this team though- CDR's 3-ball is fairly inconsistent.
