Well, technically it is. The problem is high school players don't want to go there.

I've said time and time again that each NBA team should have a specific D-League team within 250 miles or an adjacent state. The structure would look like this

30 teams (one for each NBA team)
Whenever possible, place teams in states or major markets w/o NBA teams to draw interest for parent club
Make the draft a 4 round 120 pick system
54 game season running from Nov 1st-March 15th (~a week before the deadline for playoff eligible waiver claims)
High school players eligible immediately

I would like to add that they should be able to make more than $24k per year.

What are the rules for sponsorship in the D League?

I think D-League salaries should be varying, not the 3 different contracts they currently have.

In college they are not allowed to sign endorsements, are they allowed to in the D-League.

I imagine that it will eventually -- probably not until the league reaches a 1-to-1 relationship with NBA teams though.

As it is right now, players don't sign directly with the team, but with the league. I'd imagine that it's an exercise in simplicity as much as any other factors -- ensuring teams have enough space within their salary cap to fill out a roster, not leaving negotiation of a local player contract to a team sharing 5 NBA teams, facilitating trading, etc.

In college they are not allowed to sign endorsements, are they allowed to in the D-League.

While I haven't explicitly read that they are allowed, or that they are not allowed, I feel fairly comfortable in saying that they are allowed to.

Primarily because of the obvious difference between the D-League and college. The issue with college is completely different -- they are (well, ostensibly) students first, then athletes, and compensation of any kind outside of the educational realm (tuition, room and board and the like) are prohibited.

The D-League is completely different -- namely that they are professionals. Minor league, but professional athletes paid to play a sports nevertheless. I can't see any reason the NBA/D-League would try to prevent them from capitalizing on their brand (to the extent that a D-League player might have a brand,) nor what legal basis they might have. In any event, I think that the above is the only issue -- lack of brand.

Hopefully the G-league really becomes a solid farm system for the NBA.

At the very least it will be a great league for big names unable to make the NBA. Lots of popular NCAA:YouTube highlight reel guys imo.
