Adreian Payne

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Thu Mar 20, 2014 10:40 pm

How about a refresh on opinions? He seems like quite a freak for his size. NBAdraft.net has him going 28 to OKC. Seems low to me.

I like Payne, think he's a solid talent and a guy that might be able to come in and contribute. Jumper and range are both good, bangs inside, good size. Older dude though, injury problems, might have some stamina issues thought i read somewhere on the board that he had a lung issue of some sort. but i think a good effort bench guy, give you some boards and hit a few jumpers on a pick and pop at the next level.

I'm curious too. I know that he's a bit old, has the small lung, and poor steals/blocks number for his position and length, but given his size, reach, strength, and shot, and also considering how useful a PF who can shoot 3s as well as him but also rebound and play defense in this league, shouldn't he be significantly higher based on utility alone? A guy with his skill set should fit everywhere.

he still looks like a 4th big to me. i wouldn't trust his post game translating. he's very reliant on single moves and elevation. i haven't seen much in terms of intricate footwork or counters. maybe he can be an athletic finisher (he'd have to improve his hands) with some stretch capability.

I like Payne a lot, but I'm not sure he is an NBA starter. I think he is the kind of guy who can be a contributor for a team for a long time though. A quality bench guy.

Mostly a defensive big off the bench, can probably do some mid range game. If he can stay healthy I think he can be a solid rotation guy.

You mean the same defensive specialist who dropped 41 last night?

A 23 year old is dominating college competition? Shocking.

He's 6'9" with a big wingspan and solid athleticism, and a great 3 point shooter. He should be useful in the pro's regardless of his age. Stretch 4's are the big thing everyone wants.

His only game that will translate is the mid range sorry to say.

No doubt but I've come across some ridiculous hyperbole regarding him in the last 24 hrs.

he has some stretch potential, but he also has a deliberate shot set up and i don't know what he'd do against hard closeouts. him putting the ball on the deck for more than 1 dribble looks like a TO in the making.

Let's play a game. Identify that player! All stats are per 40 pace adjusted
Player A
12/13-18.7pts 12.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, .7steals, 2.2 blocks 53FG%, 40.8 3p%
13/14-21.6pts 12.7 rebounds, 4 assists, .8steals, 1.3 blocks 53.1FG%, 35.6 3p%
Player B
12/13-16.7pts 12 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.2steals, 2 blocks 54.7FG%, 38.1 3p%
13/14-22.7pts 10.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, .7steals, 1.3 blocks 51.2FG%, 40 3p%

Player A is Jerelle Benimon. Player B is Adrian Payne.

In addition to likely going undrafted, Benimon is a year younger than Payne, doesn't have a small lung, and can bring the ball up the court and pass very well. Why is Payne a 1st round pick and Benimon an undrafted free agent?

Looks alot like current amare out there. Odd for me, is that .. he doesnt seem to believe he's as good as he is. Dude has no Alpha in him. He'll go Rd 1. .but I dont have him as a difference maker.. might up like an Anthony Tolliver imo.

He's pretty good with that mid-range pull-up though - keeps him from drawing the offensive foul when there's no open lane for those long stride one dribble drives of his.

Aesthetically, he has a lot of Tragic Bronson to his game, but he has surprising amount of perimeter tools despite his clumsy bearing.

I think if a player can carry a team on his back, he's a potential all-star at the NBA level. Adreian Payne did that tonight and he's actually done it before. Without him, Michigan State just isn't as good. That's why I think McDermott will also be great in the NBA.

This is the kind of logic that made people think Jimmer Fredette was a steal in the late lottery.

Townson doesn't equal Mich. St.

I'm sure there are some great D3 players averaging 20/12/3... that doesn't mean they are as good as Benimon.

No, I know that playing at Towson hurts, and that players have been good in college at some mid-major but amounted to nothing, but of course there are exceptions to that too. I just think that Benimon should at least get a few looks for his production. He isn't being talked about at all.
