NBA Luxury Tax To Increase 7.7 Percent

The NBA 2014-15 salary cap is now projected to be $63.2 million and the tax level is projected to be $77.0 million. The numbers for 2015-16 are now projected to be $66.5 million and $81.0 million, respectively.

The official numbers won't come out until July when the NBA conducts its audit.

The salary cap and luxury tax values for the current season are $58.679 million and $71.748 million, respectively, which means the new cap projection for next season represents a 7.7% increase over this season.

The original revenue forecast for 2014-15 was $4.66 billion, so with an actual revenue of $4.75 billion, the players would get 60.5% of the difference, or $54.45 million, on top of their 50% guarantee ($2,33 billion), for a total of about $2.384 billion.

Looks like the NBA did pretty well this year financially. Likely would have seen closer to a 10-12% increase though if some bigger markets like the Lakers, Knicks and Celtics were actually in the playoffs instead of the various small market teams in the playoffs right now.

Yeh for a year and then the commissioner will drop it again the next year and make them pay tax. Absolutely absurd to not have this a locked figure for at least 3 years.

Melo to the bulls is becoming closer to a reality. If Bulls amnesty boozer and get rid of dunleavy and hinrich, they should have the cap space to offer the full non bird rights max deal to melo. The melo to houston rumors seems like rubbish to me since the rockets seem to be the favorite to land Kevin Durant in 2016 free agency. Rockets should just play out the next two seasons with the current roster with a few minor alterations. Players like patrick Beverly and terrence jones should improve every season. Kevin Mchale's contract is also up in 2016, so rockets can pitch choice of coach, great ownership and front office, no state taxes, big market and a big 3 (with harden and d12) when recruiting durant.

Uh... you got your numbers wrong.

Even if the Bulls amnesty Boozer and keep only 5 current players on their roster... they still won't be able to offer Melo a decent contract. Rose, Noah, Gibson, Snell, and Butler will already take up $43.0M in cap space. Plus there is a combined $5.0M cap hold for the Bulls' two draft picks and four empty roster spots. That means the Bulls can only offer Carmelo a contract with a starting salary of only $15.1M.

That's waaaay too low. Melo is worth at least $20M, because that's what Dwight, Bosh, Wade, CP3, and LeBron are making now. Realistically, the only way the Bulls will be able to acquire Melo is if they unload Taj Gibson in the process.

But if the Bulls gut their roster just to bring Melo in... they won't be contenders. They'll have only Melo, Noah, Jimmy Butler, and a hobbled Derrick Rose who hasn't played in 2 years. The rest of the roster would be filled with rookies and minimum wage vets. They're not gonna beat OKC or LAC or MIA or SAS or HOU with that team.

I think the whole system is dumb. Any team can go hire 3 near 20 million dollar players if they want. Any team can do what Heat did and make unequal playing field. All the NBA did was make money off the teams who want to build contenders with FA. Then again I haven't read all the rules, so I am guessing it is helping the weaker teams in the East some how.

Cap space is directly tied to league revenue. The commissioner has no say.

You can't get mad at the Heat for James, Wade and Bosh all taking less money to form a powerful core. I'm sick of everyone crying about their big 3. The Spurs had one for the longest time:

you're judging the Heat's big 3 by their talent, every team has a big 3 or 4 its just that most aren't on the same page or same book as the Heat
