Now that a certain Washington franchise is three wins from its first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 35 years, it’s easy to gloat, to say, “I told you so,” and go after the vermin who never thought the Wizards’ ownership, management and players would never amount to anything.

Damn... Its a take down

Pretty feeble takedown. Made feebler by him trying to get Twitter users to do his research for him yesterday.

Found this interesting. Ted has hired Ernie's children as executives at tech companies he's founded.

Ahhh the scent of a Monumental press release :) IIRC, This is the first time in years that Ernie was not amongst the trash-heap at the bottom.

It will be interesting to see the vote break-out. Ernie could have received 4 out of 30 votes and made the top-10 list. GM's can vote for themselves. Last year Ernie received zero votes.

You're misreading the results. Grunfeld got a first place vote, a second place vote, and two third place votes.

The voting for this award makes about as much as sense as the votes for most other NBA awards.

So my original guess was correct, 4 votes total :D When Ernie voted for himself, do you think it was for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd?

I stand corrected. Look at the graphic folks. :P

My glass-half-empty view is he's in the bottom half among playoff GMs, and was bested by one non-playoff GM. Still the Rodney Dangerfield of GMs.

EDIT: Looked again, and he's in the top half (8th). RESPECT!

Looks like he was a 3rd vote for a 2nd away from being 9th and in 8th range

EG's 4 votes probably came from GM's who fleeced him in trades.

Wow... you've decided being a twerp wasn't enough? You've gone to the real jerk level? Maybe I should quote back to you the dozen or so "hate Ernie" posts you wrote? Nah... everyone knows that you take all positions.

Ernie got 1 vote -- out of 30 possible -- as best executive this year. He got 1 vote -- out of 30 possible -- as second best executive this year. He got 2 votes -- out of 30 possible -- as third best executive this year.

And that's in a year when everything has broken his way. And it's the only time in his Wizards career, to my knowledge, that he was in the top 10. Has he ever been higher than that? I'd have rated him higher in 2010, his best year as a GM.* Other than that...? The year he signed Gilbert and Larry. That's it.

* Edit -- From June 2010 - February 2011 -- after that it's all downhill except for the pick of Beal (whom every GM in the league would have taken in his spot) and -- maybe, we hope -- Porter. Every other move since then has been crap.

Keep in mind that the guy he made the Gortat trade with was called the 3d best GM this year! Any questions?

.
I have put on my e-protective suit on before I type this note. I'm mentally ready for the razzing, the e-thrown produce, the criticism, etc. So it's okay if you just let me have it and have it good.

Here it is:

I'm convinced. I've taken a look at this year's team, not just this enjoyable run to in the playoffs with the first second round win since Donna Summer was topping the charts. But even towards the tail end of the regular season, after the existing pieces were in place. And I've flipped. I've changed my mind.

Count me as one who, if I were Ted, would re-up Ernie Grunfeld for another 2 to 3 year contract.

<ducks at the thrown lettuce and tomatoes coming my way>

I'm of the mind that he's earned it. I say that while publicly stipulating the following:

He's screwed up a lot. Even Ernie's most ardent defenders would probably vomit at Vesely, Eric Maynor, the big (final) contract he gave Baltche, the trade of a high draft pick for a one-year rental of Miller and Foye, I just get buckets, etc, etc, etc.

But if you whack him (rightfully) for his dumb moves, fairness dictates that you also give him credit for his good moves. Even if they were to clean up his dumb moves in the first place. Ernie's been pretty good at trades exploiting opportunity.

-- With Chicago, trading Veermenko (who'll never play ever) for Hinrich and Seraphin. Then flipping Hinrich for Mo Evans and Jordan Crawford. For free.

-- With Denver to get rid of Vesely and (via three way) Maynor for the Professor.

-- Kwame for Caron.

-- Cutting a year off of Gilbert's big contract with Orlando.

More importantly, I think he's got it right this time.

I read all of your posts here. Every one of you on these boards. And I consider them and take then to heart.

A number of you have criticized the Gortat for draft pick trade. But others have pointed out that a draft pick is uncertain, Gortat is a known and positive influence on our team. And I've come to change my thinking to agree with this. Gortat is likeable, hard-working, a good team mate. After the knucklehead era (I admit, Ernie drafted the knuckleheads), it's nice to see this unit gel in a manner that makes you happy for the team and proud to be a fan.

I'm a firm believer in not holding on the the past, in not getting caught up in hating an individual (versus not liking, perhaps, what they do). And IMO, this squad is something that EG should be rewarded for.

Are we a championship team? No. Can Ernie get us there. Perhaps not. But I think he's got it enough to make us a regular playoff team -- particularly in the East where for as long as I can remember, it's easier to make the playoffs. For now, I think that's a good goal to have. At least for the next 4-5 years. We need to rescue our brand and be thought of as more than the usual bunch of failures who only hit the playoffs every blue moon. After we're better known and respected (which should help in the FA market and with refs), perhaps it'll be time to find someone to take us to the next level. But we've got to crawl, then walk, then run.

I know this is difficult to read because it's disjointed. I'm not editing at all and wanted to post quickly and get back to a work project. (I'll come back later and edit this for clarity).

But i didn't want to miss the opportunity to post, for thought, discussion, and criticism, my position that Ernie's earned another contract.

(P.S. I wonder if Ted's pre-season ultamatium to make the playoffs should also get some credit. Perhaps it forced EG to look to replace an injured Oka4 for Gortat. If so, Ted needs to get credit here too.)
