Love Trade Interest Coming From Same Teams As Garnett In 2007

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon May 19, 2014 6:08 pm

History is repeating itself in the form of the Minnesota Timberwolves trading away a perennial All-Star power forward named Kevin.

In 2007, the Wolves traded away Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics. The Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns and Chicago Bulls were the teams to be closely rumored to discussing a trade with the Wolves.

In 2014, the Wolves appear likely to trade away Kevin Love. The parties likely to be involved are a virtual repeat of those 2007 trade discussions. The Celtics, Warriors, Lakers, Suns and Bulls have all been mentioned as interested parties. The Houston Rockets have also been added to the mix in these discussions.

The New York Knicks were also interested in Garnett back in 2007, but like their interest in Love this time around, they don't appear to have enough trade assets to become a realistic partner.

Maybe the Wolves should do something different since it didn't work out the first time around.

lol. They got Al Jefferson and a ton of picks... cap room... That deal wasn't as one-sided as most think. The issue with Minny is their management's ability to maintain and build on what they ALREADY have... tons of fails throughout KG and Love's time there.

Funny, but the trade itself isn't the "something different" they should do... No one could save the Wolves from Kahn.

Every fan and talking head couldn't wait to complain about how McHale "gave" Boston KG same as they complained about the Gasol trade being a Jerry West favor. It's common knowledge now how everyone ate crow on Marc Gasol later, but is the KG trade ANY different? The Wolves got plenty of assets for KG and just blew it. Did Boston force them to do any of these things?

1) Draft Jonny Flynn 6th overall instead of say Steph Curry (#7), DeMar DeRozan (#9), Brandon Jennings (#10), Gerald Henderson (#11), Tyler Hansbrough (#12), Ty Lawson (#18), Jeff Teague (#19), Darren Collison (#21), Taj Gibson (#26)

2) Draft Wayne Ellington instead of any of these guys who were avail and picked shortly afterwards:
Patrick Beverley, Danny Green, DeJuan Blair, Marcus Thornton, Chase Budinger, Dante Cunningham, Jodie Meeks, Jonas Jerebko, Patty Mills, etc...

3) Trade Al Jefferson for Kosta Koufos, a 2011 1st round draft pick, and 2012 1st round draft pick

Guess what? They blew those two picks as well:
Donatas Motiejunas at #20, ahead of Kenneth Faried, Chandler Parsons, Jimmy Butler, Isiah Thomas, Norris Cole, Shelvin Mack
Terrence Jones at #18, ahead of Jared Sullinger, Draymond Green, Khrys Middleton

And Koufos was later traded with Corey Brewer for walking injuries Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph. Randolph took a 50% paycut to walk to Denver in 2012. Koufos briefly became a regular starter in Denver, now a rotation player in Memphis.

They actually did draft Ty Lawson but they traded him.

Minn doesn't deserve credit for that pick, it was clearly Den telling them who to pick for them.

Love isn't coming to Boston.

I never knew Phoenix pursued KG back in '07. Imagine if they got him to play with Nash who was near the top of his game then.

This is a repeat of what KG went through? I mean they've had time to put together a contending team...they got as far as...not making the playoffs? Disappointing really with both Rubio and Love on the same team

I don't have to imagine. That would have been a championship team.

1. Passed on Curry for Rubio
2. Passed on Paul George for Wesley Johnson
3. They will suck for life till they get someone with a good eye for talent to pair with the one star they get a decade

Kakn definitely screwed us and set us back years, we could have been competeing if he hits on half his picks. Flip Saunders has got off to a great start draft wise picking up Shabazz at #14 and Dieng at #21 - two players who showed a lot of potential and productivity in the case of Dieng.
