If I get the opportunity to go to L.A. and play for the Lakers, I know I’ll have love for the city. And their fans are loyal and they have the rivalry with the Clippers. But just to be in an environment where you have a great player like Kobe, where you have a mentor in a way as a rookie, I think that would be the best option.
I just want to know his work ethic, what he’s done to be where he is at the moment, because he’s definitely in the talk of one of the greatest of all time. So I want to just pick his brain, what he’s done, how he’s adapted over the years and still been able to average over 20 points in the league.
Exum recently spoke about the man he believes could help shape him: "A reason why I signed with the agent I'm with is he has Kobe Bryant, and he's been through this when he came into the NBA. I guess having him as a mentor who can guide me through what he did, and how he became successful, is something which is pretty good."
Yup, Lakers AND Magic... not Lakers and Celtics. That fansided writer has a poor memory.
As for the Magic, he envisions helping his close friend Victor Oladipo—they met at Indiana during Exum's recruiting visit when he was contemplating college—with point guard duties.
"They’re having some point guard problems and they’re trying to get Victor Oladipo into the point guard," he said. "Also, having a good relationship with Victor, I think that would be a good fit. He could kind of mentor me a bit coming into the point guard."
Exum is coming in to workout for the Magic early this week, not the Celtics or Lakers. He wants to be here. You know who actually did work out for both the Celtics and Lakers?
I know you felt burned by Dwight and Shaq, but to be completely honest what NBA player didn't grow up wanting to play for the Lakers? If you ask the top prospects in HS and College right now which two teams they'd like to play for in the NBA, I bet nearly every answer would include Lakers. How many would say Magic?
Marcus Smart said this about Boston recently:
“Rondo is one of the greatest point guards to ever play this game. If I’m fortunate enough and Boston picks me, and that means I have to sit on the bench and play behind Rondo, that’s an honor, to learn from one of the greatest point guards of that position, especially me playing the point guard position.”
OMG OMG Smart worked out for Celtics, idolizes Rondo and wants to play in Boston. Does that mean he will force his way to Boston? Nah.
