If I were PJ, I wouldn't do a sign-and-trade, regardless if I would get nothing if Anthony leaves. He gets out from under the luxury tax and the amount of money he would have available next year would be awesome. He could get his pick of free agents and have the space to absorb all kinds of contracts if he wished. Plus, he would end up with a pretty good pick next year in what looks like another loaded draft.

1) We have lined up Mirotic + McD + Bairstow without impacting a single cent of CapSpace. Only capholds.
2) We have Boozer lined up for either an amnesty or a trade

Why is this crucial?

If no Melo, then we can quickly lineup our Plan B. If Melo, then we have the exact right assets to add with exceptions (Mirotic) and the rookie scale (McD and Bairstow).

Also notice how quiet things have been on the Kirk and DJ front? I bet you we already have verbal agreements in place with one of them/both.

We are not letting the situation get ahead of us...instead we are proceeding as if we have no cap space...this is the right thing to do at this juncture.

Not quite true in that trading up for McD, rather than stashing a Euro and taking another wing (e.g. Hood) would have cost less in salary & not brought Anthony Randolph's 1.8 million onto the roster, which also needs to be moved. But the Bulls *really* liked McD, and we'll see if that is justified later.

We potentially offer similar money with a far superior roster than NY or LA

I could accept him going to Houston or Dallas at least that also makes alot of sense

For me its two-fold:

1) The cost of acquiring him matters to me. The pricetag...not so much. Hence S&T is my preferred alternative
2) If we miss on Melo, I dont think its as big of a deal as missing on Wade, LBJ, Joe Johnson and Bosh in 2010. Those were all much better fits to the Bulls in 2010 and were more complete players in 2010 than Melo is now.

I dont feel like not getting him is a big deal at all. Our off-season plan should remain the following: Add scoring, add ball handling, get Rose game ready.
For love, not money.

If Melo intentionally leaves, Phil knows that he will at least go and play for the team that is owned and run by his girlfriend, Jeannie Buss. Phil in the end can always say I offer him the max, but he just did not want to be here. In turn, Phil will get enough flexibility with the cap to build the team his way, which he had previously mentioned.

How does Phil 'win' in that scenario?

So if Melo re-signs: Phil said, "man are we fortunate." if he doesn't: "man are we fortunate... and we're moving forward."

These were Phil's word on April 22nd when he was asked about Melo impending free-agency status. Of course, Phil has retracted that comment because he got a lot of hits in the media for saying that.

I don't want him at the max. He's not worth it. Sometimes the best deal is the one you didn't make.

Sounds like Carmelo is too worried about the money. We should just move on. Like I said last night, the Bulls can still be championship contenders next year. Sign a wing and solidify the bench.

Knicks will still be in the tax with Melo gone I think. The amount of money he would have next year is the same either way too. Boozer's contract will expire, he doesn't have to pick up Snell's option and all the other guys are unguaranteed so they'll be cut soon as the deal goes through.

It does mean paying a lot more salary and tax in exchange for medium quality picks though.

Why would Phil be motivated to a sign and trade with us when he can also do that with the Lakers? If all that we are willing to offer, as some fans here wish, is future compensation in the forms of future draft picks, it will not get done. The Lakers can also offer future draft picks, which are expected to be higher pick since they are in the much tougher Western Conference. Besides, I am pretty sure Phil would rather see Melo go out west to the Lakers to work for his girlfriend, Jeannie Buss, than to see him come to us.

Because LA has outright cap space. Why would they give NY anything?

Edit: beaten by the gorilla

Well, only the Knicks can give that 5th year, so sign and trade makes Melo 30 millions richer. I am pretty sure Melo would prefer that.

The CBA prevents the extra year from being transferred in a sign and trade. So no....

Money- cash money. Legacies are intangible things, cash is real. When an athlete says "I only want to win"- it means "I want to make as much money as I can and also try to win." I don't fault him or any athlete for getting every dollar they can. Careers are short and most athletes have little education- which means they will never be able to recuperate the cash once the career is over. It would be shocking and borderline stupid of him not to take the Knicks offer of 5/129.

how does it make sense to move on? We'd be taking ourselves out of the contention instead of letting Melo do it
