What would adding a cap strangle player like Parsons do for us? I agree we should have made a play for him (for cheaper) but we have our own guys to worry about right now. 4 guys need developing.
The only true argument I would have is, we could have signed him and traded him this season if we really didn't want him. But still, it is what it is. This free agent class has a lot of candy, but not necessarily the good kind.
And it makes sense for Dallas to overpay to get a guy they need. Dirk is near the end of the career and they committed to putting good players around him if he took a pay cut. They have their rim protector in Chandler, and their combo guard in Ellis, so now Parsons is a nice player to add for them. If someone like them has to overpay to get him, what else are they going to do? Waste Dirk's last two years?
But for us, overpaying on good but not great players, as tough as the west is, could potentially cripple our flexibility later.
Let our young players develop. If you can add a vet for one year to help out at a reasonable price (Pierce at $9 million or something), no long term harm done, and it could benefit the young guys and make us more competitive this year.
But paying the rest of these free agents more than 12 is getting a bit out of hand.
