POLL: Should LeBron's # Be Retired?

Post#1 » by BIRDMAN BIRDMAN » Sat Jul 12, 2014 5:56 am

Found this interesting and since there's already an ongoing debate on the off-season thread, figured to add a separate one.

Should #6 be up in the Miami Heat rafters one day? Did he do enough for you to say yes? Or was 4 years too short?

For those on the fence:

4 years may be short or not, but in 4 years he's managed to be top 10 in almost EVERY statistical category in Heat HISTORY

http://www.basketball-reference.com/tea ... areer.html

2 finals MVP, 1 MVP.
TOTAL point, rebounds assists, etc etc.

He deserves it.
Let's do it and move on and focus on our team.

Pat Riley needs a statue lol

I feel like there will be a time where we might commemorate the 2010-2014 team and Lebron gets his jersey retired

He did win the two finals MVP, and 2 MVPS in heat history, two rings obviously

He accomplished A LOT in the 4 years he was here

While I think it is a bit too soon to have this conversation...I think it will happen. Too much good has happened these last 4 years for it not to happen. There will be a time, as DefenseWins said, when this Big 3 era gets commemorated (of course Wade and Haslem get commemorated first and foremost), and LeBron will certainly be there. Once in a generation talent, one of the GOATs who brought us years of enjoyment and success.

Wade, on the other hand, will be the only player getting a statue.

No.

His name is already there, on an Olympic banner. It's a good way to honor his contributions without having to deal with the issue of the length of his term. 4 years is short, guys. I know we're an expansion team, but we need to think longterm. I want to keep it to the Olympic banner until we see if how his numbers hold up in HEAT history. We can retire it later if necessary.

I also think Wade, Haslem and Bosh should have a say in it. It wouldn't be fair to their numbers if they feel it diminishes their contributions. They should be remembered as the ones who stayed committed to the original vision of the Big3. And I say this as someone who thinks LeBron is the goat. I just don't think we should consider making that exception this early.

I think 4 years is just too soon. The rafters is not just about production, but also about commitment.

For 4 years? Sure ... we can retire his jersey for 4 years.

That would be the perfect tribute to his contributions and his loyalty to the franchise that took the shame off his resume.

yes , in Miami he matured to an all time great and he brought 4 unforgetable years to Miami , i am so thankful for what lebron has done in Miami, think about it, we got Lebron in his prime and through the Miami organization he matured to a winner, now he is taking all that experience to bring home a championship to his home area

no I'm sorry, 4 years not enough. I don't care if you win the finals allf our of those years, which we didn't buy the way, a 50 percent winning rate is not great last I checked. I'm sorry, the man use the small it was expedient for him, and at the first sign of trouble he's taking ball and going home, yet he is one of the greatest of all-time let the Cavaliers retire his number in Jersey, after his next contract is over he will have played with them three times the number of seasons he played in miami.

Really well put. This is how I'm leaning right now, though I am admittedly on the fence.

Pro: this is a guy who'll finish top-5 in history probably, and we got arguably his best 4-year stretch. Amazing run, a lot of fun.

Con: he was only here for 1 contract. And he terminated that contract early--literally left at the first opportunity. There is something problematic about that IMO. If he had re-upped with us on a 3-year deal, with an ETO after 2 years, and then blown out his knee and missed an entire season and then played mediocre the second season, then terminated the contract and left...I would probably be all about retiring his jersey. Because he did enough in the 4 years he was here--4 Finals, 2 MVPs, 2 titles, a lot of great memories--to earn it. But he didn't show the commitment to the franchise itself. Re-upping even on a short term deal to finish out the Heatles' run would've shown that commitment regardless of how it turned out.

He shouldn't get his jersey retired just for waiting until after we signed McRoberts and Granger before bailing.

Now we're stuck with role players we signed to compliment a team that no longer exists!
