Norris is having a roughish again tonight, hasn't given up a run yet and only one hit, but through three he has walked four and thrown more balls than strikes. Seems the third inning is his current mental block.
Update: Norrus survived, made it scoreless through 5 with 6K and didn't walk another batter. Maybe that will put him back on track.

Other notables tonight

NH: Pompey is 2-4 but caught stealing again. Andy Burns is 2-4, including his 11th HR, and stole his 15th base.
LAN: Matt Dean is 2-2, Mitch Nay 1-2; Chase De Jong went 4.0, 5H 1BB, 2R, 2K
I think it's time to see Burns in AAA with a chance to compete in ST

I'm on board with this. Jays Journal had a decent article on Burns and how his season has gone. Check out his lefty splits....why not eh?

With Toronto Blue Jays sporting such a huge hole at 3rd due to the injury to Brett Lawrie, why not give Andy Burns a shot or at the very least move him up to Buffalo…..it isn’t like Jared Geodert is going to ever play for the Jays. Sure you would have to add him to the 40-man roster, but Alex has been DFA’ing players left right and centre this year. Add Burns and DFA Steve Delabar. As if I needed more stats to support my stance on moving Burns up the ladder….Burns is hitting .286 against LHP……boom…..mind blown.

I wouldn't DFA Delabar, but I would move Burns to Buffalo.

BTW, Daniel Lietz has been moved from Bluefield to Vancouver.

Agreed on both points. Delabar was bad this year, but not, for example, Santos-level bad. And he's cheap and coming off an all-star season. I expect he'll be back up to the bigs before this season is out.

I know we're desperate for guys that hit left-handed pitching, but a guy with mediocre numbers in AA ball doesn't cut it for me. He is due a promotion though, so let's see how he does in Buffalo first.

He also got picked off. I wonder if there's a scouting report out on Pompey in AA regarding his base running tendencies, because he's having a rough go so far. It's very early still, so it could just be a freak sample.

I think pick offs also get counted as caught stealing in the minors, i guess your point still stands though

A long game - 11 innings - for the GCL Jays. Two notable five inning pitching performances by Nick Wells (2014 #3) and Connor Greene (2013 #7)

Connor Greene has to be playing his way up the Jays top 20 list. Nice control, decent K's. Another guy that could use a promotion.

Not only has Barreto compiled a .333 batting average, which ranks fifth in the Northwest League, but he also finds himself near the top of several other offensive categories. Through the first half of the season, Barreto leads the eight-team league in RBIs (36) and doubles (13) while ranking second in hits (49), runs scored (34) and triples (4).

"He's a guy we know can hit for average, and he's going to hit for some power as well," Schneider said. "He has a lot more room for power in his swing, and for a young kid at 18 years old, he has done some really, really good things with the bat this year."

"He carries himself very well beyond his years. He has played baseball for a long time and kind of has a confidence about him, especially in the batter's box," Schneider said. "For him to be playing against guys who are four, five and six years older than him, I think it speaks volumes to the success he's had so far."

Its crazy how hot Pompey has been since that 0-21 start, he's OPSing around .900, obviously you can't just ignore the bad start in AA but if he keeps up this pace he should start 2015 in AAA and be ready for a midseason promotion.

Smoral with another strong outing at Bluefield.
4IP-3H-1ER-1BB-5K also 2 HBP.

Just 2 walks in his last 9 innings and 14 strikeouts.

Dan Jansen with another 2-3 outing and a HBP. Tellez 2-4 and a SB.

Dat #1 draft class (Jim Callis):

1. Blue Jays - Toronto had the advantage of possessing the top pair of picks in the Draft, at No. 9 and 11, and used them on East Carolina right-hander Jeff Hoffman ($3,080,000), a candidate to go No. 1 before he had Tommy John surgery, and Kennesaw State's Max Pentecost ($2,888,300), the best true catcher available. The Jays also grabbed a pair of projectable high school pitchers in righty Sean Reid-Foley from Florida ($1,128,800) and lefty Nick Wells from Virginia ($661,800) in the second and third rounds, and they moved enough money around to land athletic Tennessee prep outfielder Lane Thomas for $750,000 in the fifth.

Avert your eyes if you have a weak stomach...

Gareth Morgan's stat line to date:

.158/.273/.237

39 strikeouts in 76 at bats. 51% K rate. :o

It's been ugly, no doubt.

Hope he eventually gets it turned around... would be nice to see some more Canadian success stories in baseball.

Gatewood has had nearly as bad a start as well... marginally better K rate, but still hovering around 40%.

Chavis is another with a really ugly start.

Actually, I've lost my marbles. Skipped the first name, interpreted as Matt Morgan, our 5th rounder who is posting equally scary numbers...but thankfully not for a massive pile of cash.

Bad draft class for Morgans.

Edit: and now to compound it, I edited this post rather than quoting it.

$2 million seemed like an absurd amount of money for him at the time of signing. It looks even worse now.

Okay, Dan Jansen might be good. Really, really good. Fourth home run in thirty-two games. Seems to do everything pretty well, and is a very good defensive catcher.

I had him around 10 in my hastily-constructed rankings, but bumped it down as it seemed crazily aggressive given the small sample. But his past ten games are insane...he's dominating at the moment, and a promotion might be in the offing.

Schad, what kind of reports have you seen on his defence? The bat is interesting, you want to see him do this against (granted he's a young 19 year old) slightly tougher competition but its hard to deny there's something intriguing here.

When Jansen was drafted, Callis really liked his defence. He specifically praised his arm strength and power potential with the bat (which seems as if he is realizing of late). He was projected to be drafted much higher but he suffered a broken wrist and fell.
