Can we please not turn this OT thread into another "Kobe is so hated/underrated on RealGM" thread? I can't see that ending well. If I am not wrong that also led to the Top 100 2011 thread being closed.

Re: PC Board OT thread
yeah let's tell some more personal basketball stories. I've already shared getting dunked on by Kenyon Martin and ending up with a broken nose, but my church also had a summer rec league team about a dozen years ago in a fairly small suburb of Dallas where there was only one level of play and it was well above ours. In one game there was a guy about 6'6" or so who just kept drilling 3 after 3 after 3 to the point of at least a dozen in the first half.
So naturally I decided the best way to represent our church was to see to it that he learned you don't do that against the FMUMC men's basketball team. So I assigned myself to him to start the 2nd half and just hammered his shooting arm on the first 3 he took. Swish. 4 point play. Guy doesnt bat an eye. Next time down. Whack. Swish. 4. Pat on my butt as he runs back on D. Next time down. 2-hand shove to the chest as he's releasing. Swish. 6(2 technical FT's after I got T'd up.) I signal for a sub.

Bellagio floor. I think I went to cash out because I was up a moderate amount after about 40 minutes of Blackjack. I get to the desk, and out of the corner of my left eye, I see a mammoth figure slouching down to talk to the cash-out person at the next desk. I figure "whatever, it's just a tall person." Then he stands tall. I glance over. Tall dude looks familiar.
I walk with purpose to my buddy who's a Knick fanatic and go "Am I wildly mistaken or is that Patrick Ewing?" His eyes widen and he immediately says "That's Patrick Ewing." We walk over and say hi, and my friend says he appreciates everything he did for the franchise and asks to take a picture, but Ewing declined. Pat was pretty nice throughout the encounter though.
Back in 2006 or 2007, I went to a Wizards/Nets game and got there like 3 hours early. We had nosebleed seats but were able to go courtside being there that early. Gilbert Arenas was signing autographs, and when he signed mine, I go "Drop 50 tonight, man." It was right after he scored a huge amount of points the night before I think. He just looked at me like I was weird and said "OK."
I went to a Steve and Barry's when Stephon Marbury was signing autographs and got him to sign a Knicks shirt when he played in NY.
I don't think I've ever played with NBA players. I've watched Division-1 players play pick-up in a gym. I saw Smush Parker play at West 4th last summer. He's always around playing in the city.

I'm a chicago guy, which also means a depaul guy. Dave Corzine works there now and I've gotten to know him personally. When I was a senior I sanded my ping pong table down and painted Jordan, Corzine, Noah and Rose on it. I told Dave about it and asked him if he had interest in signing it.
One day on lunch I walked him back to my apartment. He signed it and two roommates of mine played dave and I in a game of beer pong. It was awesome.
A 4th roommate was playing NBA 2k whichever one was the first one with Jordan. He was playing with an 80s Chicago team. Dave loves video games and always has been- his story about beating MJ in pinball is pretty comical- and wanted to check it out. He played a little bit and then asked what his ratings were. My roommate showed him and he got all pissed off saying he was better than that.
Tooting my own horn, I think it's pretty damn cool (For a diehard Bulls/Chicago guy) to know Dave Corzine. He's the guy who Jordan said he had the most respect for after his first year in the pros because Dave would just sit in the corner of the locker room and drink beer until all the media left.

Okay Brand, Michael Jackson didn't come over to my house to use the bathroom. But his sister did.

Ty Lawson was a pretty big poker player in school and he did a great job of keeping it low key. I played with him a few times (in a dorm game in Granville Towers which at the time were not affiliated with the University -- they are now) and he's actually solid. By far the best thinker (for an athlete) I've ever played against, they normally suck. Him and Tyler (Hansborough) are two of the most opposite people you'll ever encounter (perhaps that's why they're on-court chemistry was so good?). He was a regular at our Frat parties too, definitely one of my favorite heels. Very open guy, never acted like anything other than just another guy.
One of my Frat bros got Hansborough through geology (forget which but it was probably 101). Literally all of his assignments and exams were 80% copied by Ty. This ended up being beneficial as we got him to do a couple "cameo" type appearances as the house.
They may have never made the league but Marcus Ginyard and Mike Copeland were house regulars as well. I've balled with "Cope" more times than I can count. We've even hooked up with the same chick, but it's all love. Awesome awesome guy.
Marcus loves him some 2k but after a while refused to play against me. I used to beat him by 20/30+ while he & his girl stopped by and purchased...uh..."treats." He was...not exactly the hardest worker at his craft
.
Apparently Sheed and his entourage started making regular summer appearances in the Hill beginning in the 2010 offseason and since one of his boys was good friends with a bro from way back in the day he stopped by and chilled at the house for a bit. My boys have sent me pictures and everything. Needless to say there are very very few moments in life I've ever been that jealous of anyone, friend or otherwise. I mean can you think of an NBA player who would be more awesome to hang out with? I certainly can't.
Before we moved one of my older cousins used to babysit Herb Williams daughter and I've met both a couple times. All I remember was that she was a little angel and Herb is probably the most unassuming professional athlete in history. Seriously, he's as nice as they come.
Uhh, never mind on Kyrie, way too high profile a player to talk about.

I ran into Sheed at Buffalo Wild Wings in Durham two summers ago...one of the more random things that ever happened to me. I went over to say hi and he refused to high-five me
One of my suitemates' godfathers in Michael Jordan, and four years ago during UNC's Centennial Game a lot of former players came to Chapel Hill, including Jordan. Later that night I went to Top of the Hill (popular restaurant/bar in Chapel Hill) and Jordan was there with his entourage (including Charles Oakley) sitting at a table. He was chomping on a cigar, smiling, and hanging out with about five 21-24 year old gorgeous girls. I was with my suitemate and he saw Jordan and walked over to say hi, so naturally I followed him. He talked with Jordan briefly and introduced me to MJ...I was acknowledged for a grand total of half a second and then was never looked at again
So when is this plane going down? I'll ride it til' it hits the ground!

Every story I've ever heard about personal encounters with Jordan paint him to be a complete sleaze.

Not the way to get Sheed's attention bro.
4 Words will do the trick (should this ever occur again): "Dutches - At - My - Place."

Thinking of getting an e-reader. Anyone have any recommendations between a Kobo or a Kindle?

Both are very good, but I'd probably go with the Kindle Paperwhite since it has a sharper and whiter screen (Kobo screen has yellow tint), in-line footnotes, vocab builder, landscape mode, dictionary/wikipedia options when long pressing word and screenshot feature. You can also receive e-books directly from libraries.
The Kobo e-reader supports ePub, has more fonts, micro sd slot and the brightness is easier to adjust.

From what I understand most e-books are in ePub format or PDF. Kindle doesn't read ePub, so the selection will be a lot smaller, yes?

Yeah, but you can use calibre or send ePub to Kindle to get around that issue.

I don't have insomnia but I am a night person and have trouble sleeping before 1-2 am. For me to sleep by 10 or 11 when I am working or have other commitments is an achievement. How many of you are nocturnal around here?

I WAS on overnights for years, but these days, I do 0630-0000. Does that count as nocturnal for ya?

I think overnight overdoes it for me (pun intended). I prefer to sleep by 2ish and waking up 9-10 would be ideal time for me. 630 am to 12 am is one hell of a shift though. From what I have heard you guys work a couple of weeks and then get one week off, is that how you are scheduled?

Essentially, yeah. Same principle.

I've become this way and am trying to fight it. Last semester of grad school had no classes before noon, and my research let me do it whenever, so I've been growing that way since. Have to be up for work, but usually a nap after work does it for me a few days a week.
