And damn, mystic's done? Can't he just smurf though?

Positivity wasn't banned. He's not even suspended anymore. Seems like he just stopped posting/visiting RealGM (his last visit was on July 14). Same with ShaqAttack.

Mystic was an amazing poster, no doubt, and I obviously agree with the guys who say that his "good" (great contributions in terms of statistical analysis) far outweighs his "bad" (the fact that he could sometimes be too harsh or no-nonsense).

mystic should still be posting on this forum. Guy knew his stuff. Then again, I don't really know what led to his ban or really care to know.

a lot of the most knowledgeable, and as a result best posters like elgee or mystic either rarely post or have given up entirely because (and im speculating here) its irritating and tiresome to have discussions with certain posters or ideas that are illogical or refuted 1000 times already. its just the nature of this forum really - youd need an invite only, reputation based forum to have consistently great discussion and quality posters stick around. thats why the best torrent/download trackers are setup like that lol.

It's really shame on realGM's moderators that poster like mystic (by far the most knowledgeable about statistics here) was banned for something like that. It's especially big hit for PC board, where RAPM is often used, because mystic, accrossthecourt and shutupandjam are basically the only people here with enough statistical knowledge to understand math behind RAPM.

It wasn't really just that post. He was being a gigantic prick the whole time, and frankly he's always been a rather miserable guy to interact with most of the time.

Yeah, he had some other instances prior to that, and was doing his usual shtick with being a smarmy jerk w/ the emoticons and whatnot.

I disagree with yours opinions (maybe because he is not native English speaker you see him that way?), but even if that's the case, then who cares? It's basketball board and how much quality information someone provides should matter the most. And mystic was GREAT on that area. You guys are too sensitive and care too much how someone act on internet board instead on focusing on quality of information. And thus maybe you have more polite board, where no one will say unpleasant truth about other people, but also where less quality information is provided. Think about it that way: would you like people like Doctor House talk about medicine or Sheldon Cooper about physics or even Kobe Bryant about basketball or would you rather ban them from discussion, because they are jerks? If the latter is the answer then it's a shame, because it means the truth no longer is a goal in the discussion. And in fact banning mystic is a sign, that realGM moderators don't care much about the truth.

It wasn't that, and I don't mind people not being completely perfect and polite, but mystic had a history of being abrasive, and was warned multiple times beforehand. He continued, and was banned. I personally stopped even replying to him at one point b/c I just found him annoying and abrasive, and its not an English thing b/c I haven't had an issue w/ other non native speakers.

There has to be an ignore feature on this forum.

I'd much rather read his posts. He didn't know the meaning of agree to disagree and may have been too arrogant with his thoughts, but the information outweighed that. If he were a troll, I'd understand but I never saw his posts in that light.

We have a basic minimal standard of politeness; if you continue to ignore it and abuse people, then you may be a genius like Bobby Knight but you don't belong on a fun discussion forum. Do you think Knight should continue coaching despite his abusing his players? Many people do. Do you think House should have been allowed to practice medicine when he was stealing drugs from the hospital to feed his addiction? Not without treatment and an agreement to change the misbehavior.

I didn't ban Mystic and haven't looked at the details of the last straw stuff for him, but we aren't on an ultimate search for truth here, we are just posters like you that are here to enjoy ourselves. If someone is ruining it for others, they might be better off doing something else.

Well, if someone is ruing other peoples enjoyment here, then these people can put him on ignore list (on realGM it's called "foes list") - that's why this option exists. And it depends on your free choice if you will do it or not. On the other hand, when someone like mystic is banned, then people like me - who prefer quality of information above everything else - are deprived of what they value here and they can't do anything about that.

lorak,

I get he is a big stats guy and thus was a pretty good contributor to this board. But he was a terrible poster on many other boards where he spoke with his usual arrogance and vitriol and just completely disrupted everything.

No poster probably ever was given more chances because he has some very high-profile supporters, but ultimately he's responsible for his actions.

I could care less if he's banned or not in general, but were he to ever be reinstated, I would push really hard to get him board-banned from every single sub-forum I mod. I don't have the time or energy to spend hours and hours cleaning up after him when he decided to drop by the Trade Board or the Mavs board and just wreak havoc. I can certainly personally ignore him a poster, but I can't as a Mod.

Its frankly insulting to all Mods, but more importantly to the other really strong posters we have here who are able to share their statistical wizardry and their basketball knowledge without being a complete jerk to everyone. And you know good and well its not an English-issue. Its an I don't care issue.

Just one note - moonbeam has a ton of technical knowledge on regression techniques as well. Great poster, and I've really enjoyed his posting throughout the project. :)

Anyhow I don't want to step on moderators' toes so I won't push the issue/bring it up again, but I'm hoping a reconciliation is possible at some point. I guess the APBRmetrics board is there to read mystic's musings, but I always appreciated reading his take.
Now that's the difference between first and last place.

I admit I don't know too much of the back-story, though I wouldn't be too hard on the mods. It's a delicate line to walk (to maintain mature and civil discourse without being too strict/sensitive). Surely you've been on other "less managed" forums where it's literally a bunch of immature idiots flinging poo all day every day.
While there are certainly heated disagreements here, I'm grateful that the environment doesn't resemble that. And it's what the mods will or will not tolerate that sets the tone. So they must be doing a reasonably decent job, imo.

I see both sides of the coin here. mystic was a good poster with fantastic insights and I only interacted with him once or twice and it was quite civil. However, he could be rude and outright dismissive at times as well.

I don't think it's fair to say if you didn't like his rudeness you should put him on ignore. That's not the way a forum with 1000s of members works. Insulting others no matter how wrong you think are only devolves the overall quality of conversation.

All that being said I still rather have him as a contributor on the forum but that's not our call to make.
