Kawhi Leonard, Spurs End Extension Talks

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Oct 31, 2014 6:21 pm

Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs have broken off talks on a contract extension.

Agent Brian Elfus and Leonard have held firm on their desire for a maximum contract extension, something Spurs management won’t consider until July.

“We feel Kawhi is deserving of a max contract, and we are disappointed that something couldn’t get done,” Elfus told Yahoo Sports. “There’s no debating Kawhi’s value. The market has been set. He’s done everything the Spurs have asked of him, exceeded all of their expectations. Coach [Gregg] Popovich has gone out of his way to call Kawhi the future face of the franchise. We have great respect for the Spurs organization, but here, we simply agree to disagree.

“There will be no shortage of teams interested in Kawhi’s services next year. There will be a lot of contract scenarios available to us, and we will explore them all.”

San Antonio could sign Leonard to a five-year, $90 million-plus extension now or next summer, if the Spurs are willing to make him their designated player. But Leonard could also sign an offer sheet with a rival team that includes a player option in the third season that would allow him to potentially leave the Spurs in 2017.

Sources say the Spurs want to keep Leonard's contract off the books until they can explore free agent targets, especially since Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili could retire.

RC Buford isn't going to let one of the league's premier players go

Just stop wasting time here and give Leonard his money, R.C. Buford. The market dictates contracts and right now, the market isn't looking too favorable for management with guys like Alec Burks getting absurd deals.

Good move. They will propably try to go for a big fish in free agency that fits them, like Marc Gasol or Dragic. They are propably the closest players, style wise, to Duncan and Ginobili, who may even retire when the season ends. After they try to go for the big fish, then they will match whatever offer Kawhi brings to them. If he's smart, he'll let them find another guy or two that can play and replace Duncan and Ginobili to get both his money and a great team.

Finally someone gets it. Doubt they go after Dragic, but Marc is a real possibility. Why tie up money now when they have to pay Green and find replacements for Manu and Duncan later?

This is smart on the Spurs part but dangerous also when a leech like Morey is lurking out there. I can see that man offering Leonard a crazy deal even more odd than the one mentioned in the story. Anybody offering such a deal would be doing it just to screw the Spurs if they matched.

Either way he will be suiting up for the Spurs for years to come. They wont resign him due to the cap hold and chasing a big name FA. If he signs an offer sheet of 4/70, then they will match. Or he resigns for 5/90. Pretty simple...

If they are waiting on the market to dictate his value, which is going to be a max contract, why not lock him up now?Why play any games,Iam sure leonard is going to take it personal (what player wouldnt). Why play with fire if your going to match whatever hes offered.

I don't think top free agents want to play in LA. Your organization is in shambles. Clippers have definitely taken over the Staples Center.

That's not the point. If they sign another big name free agent then they can go over the cap to extend Leonard.

He will get paid regardless from the spurs they are just looking to take advantage of bird rights.

The Lakers are a franchise in shambles - or a franchise seeking its next star. Our organization knows how to shell out the $$$ and our superstars get their money.

Kahwi could explore signing this offer sheet and still end up back in SA. Either way he gets paid. The risk is alienating him... and I wouldn't do that if I intend to get the best out of him on Duncan and Manu's last legs.

Clippers need to heavily pursue Kawhi Leonard next summer.

CP3 and BG are already on max deals, and D.Jordan will be commanding something close to the max as well this coming offseason. Unless Ballmer is ok with going over the luxury (which I'm sure he is ok with considering the fact that he dropped 2Bil on the Clippers), getting Kawhi is just not possible.

But Clippers signing Kawhi would make them instant favorites for a title:

CP3/Farmar
Reddick/Crawford
Leonard/Barnes
Griffin/Turkoglu
DJ/Hawes

Think someone already said it but it's actually smart. They have so much cap space that it would be smart to sign someone else and then him. This article pretty much just shows an example of how agents are scum. Talking about how many other options he will have in WEEK ONE of the regular season.

I follow many sports but the NBA by far leads in rumours regarding players future MONTHS before contracts are up. Heck, what's the update on LeBron's 2016 plans while we are at it.
