Bottom line - the Magic are still in rebuild mode, and missing arguably their most important player.

This past offseason - coming off a bottom-3 performance - we drafted a 19-year old project with our first pick and handed the floor general reins to a rookie PG. We signed guys like Ben Gordon and Luke Ridnour. I know some fans truly believe this is the year, but I think all you can really ask for is that the Magic compete hard every game (so far, so good), and that the young guys continue to develop.

I know it's boring; the initial excitement of starting over from scratch has passed and now people want the Magic to win. But that's not how a rebuild works. This offseason we're going to have tons of cap space and likely another high lottery pick. We're getting very close. Hang tight.

I don't think JV will be fired in the middle of the season. That would only happen if there was a pressure on him to win games, and it's still year 3 of the rebuild, therefore I think that Henningan doesn't mind losing for now. However, since he has showed so many flaws as a coach, maybe he gets fired after this season ends, who knows...

Bad coaches can have extensive NBA experience and be assistants for great coaches.

Exhibit A: Tyrone Corbin. 15 years playing experience in the NBA. Assistant to Jerry Sloan for 7 years.

Exhibit B: Brian Shaw. ~15 years playing experience in the NBA. Assistant to Phil Jackson for 6 years.

Not saying I think JV will get fired this season.

In hindsight this is interesting:

The list of three is made up of Philadelphia 76ers associate head coach Michael Curry, Phoenix Suns player development coach Lindsay Hunter and San Antonio Spurs assistant Jacque Vaughn, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Pretty bad list of candidates. What if... Rob was just looking for a patsy to run the show? Someone to get some losses and help out the young guys while following the front office's orders.

Being a bad coach doesn't make you a basketball idiot.

Also, you cut out the far more important piece of my post.

Everyone wants to win right now today. We keep losing but we are doing it in competitive fashion against some not so bad teams (possibly even a great one or two) and we are doing it without arguably our best player. We are doing this while going against the popular demand of force feeding minutes to our rookies at times. Why is everyone so sure that the extended minutes to our vets are what keeps us from winning rather then keeps up from getting blown out?

I like the progress we are already seeing from Payton and Gordon. Is none of that due to JV?

I like how competitive we have been against teams most wouldn't have expected us to compete with. Is none of that due to JV?

I don't know the answers to these questions and I'm not sold on JV one way or the other yet, but I am shocked at how sure everyone else is of him as a failure.

I would have taken a shot of Lindsey Hunter as a coach.

I would consider David Fizdale from the Miami Heat, even though I have no idea whether he is interested in the job.

So playing Ridnour over Payton the whole 4th quarter against the raptors last night wasn't a glaring mistake? We had something like a 7 point lead when he pulled payton out. Lowery abused Ridnour for 12 straight mins and that move single handedly lost us the game. If we had a competent coach we would be competing for the 8th seed.

I don't like vaughn, yet I've seen him criticized this season both for keeping starters too long, and for going with bench when starters are rolling on 2 different nights. if you lose, everything you did becomes a mistake.

and nope I don't think that was a glaring mistake, after giving up the lead in 2 minutes we were playing just fine. back to backs are tough things for rookies, if you had chance give elfrid rest I think you should take it, and he did. if tobes have made that last shot we'd talking about much different things.

We wouldn't have even been in that position if we had Payton in the game. I defend Vaughn a lot around here. I'm always giving him the benefit of the doubt. But what he did last night was clearly wrong and stupid.

Look - it's one thing to blame him for every loss. Yea, he makes some mistakes every game but plenty of coaches do. It's another to have a game like last night, where he left a gassed vet in for stated reasons that said vet simply wasn't providing at the time (spacing and flow). I could understand if the Raps were respecting Ridnour's offense. They weren't. I could understand if he was getting penetration and freeing up our hotter shooters for better outside looks. He wasn't. I could see if he was hitting badly needed shots at the time. He just wasn't. What's frustrating is that JV did see the issue and adjust by putting the ball in Fournier's hands, but then left Ridnour in for offense he wasn't providing at the time and for defense that was a liability on the other end when every point mattered.

I do agree that JV get's a bad wrap too often (read: ALWAYS) when we lose - but some games can be lost due to nonsensical moves by a coach, and last night seems to be one of them. It's just hard to understand. We've seen Elf go into a game in the final minutes and beast and essentially win the game for us with raw determination and effort. He didn't even get once second of a chance to make that happen again when it was desperately needed. Frustrating is the only word that comes to mind.

I'm OK with him still. Let's be honest. We are at absolute best a frindge playoff team but more likely will settle into a top 10 pick. A notably better coach may have squeezed out a win or two, but at what cost I am not sure.

Just wait and see what happens. I do not think JV has lost the team. To me, that is a bigger factor.

Folks, I've cracked the code.

1. Build lead with Payton.
2. Evaporate lead with Ridnour.
3. Use Ridnour's veteran savvy to win close game.

Just teasing!

I'm on the Fred Hoiberg bandwagon. I'd like to see him replace JV next season.

We did lose our best player on the eve of the season. The beginning of the year is chaotic enough, but losing Oladipo and Frye, while trying to incorporate two rookies into the lineup, along with all your other guys?

Not saying Vaughn is a good coach, but come on, he should get this season to showcase his talents if they exist.

Although if I keep seeing Ridnour in for the final 8 minutes each game I'm going to need some sedatives or something.

Give him a full season to see how he goes with a proper squad and an honest attempt to make the playoffs. Decide on what to do after the 82 games - when you can have a better idea that a lack of chemistry, general inexperience and injuries aren't major factors.

You can't really rate a coach on how great his tank job was (unless you're Philly...), so this season is really the first we're seeing of his true colours. As with Mad Guru (and others), I'm not necessarily saying he's a great coach. But flipping through coaches too quickly is a dangerous game imo, so we should at least give him the full season.
