I do agree that Casey needs to mix it up a bit and run a few plays and use Lou isolation as a backup plan, not the primary one.

That's the correct answer.

When you decide that your only going to take a shot between 0-3 second left on the game clock your efficiency goes way down.

Shooting earlier would be stupid because any gains in efficiency will be offset by the odd score of your opponent.

That's one point per possession. That's decent efficiency. It's not great, but it's also a really fun way to end the quarter.

One thing that people are missing from this analysis is that he's VERY good at running out the clock in these scenarios. This is the appeal to the coaching staff.

As the OP has said, every possession counts and when you can get an (arguably) decent shot but guarantee the other team doesn't get a shot, there is huge value in that.

Yep - simple game clock management.

But the whole point is to use up as much of the shotclock as possible so that the other team has no time or less time to take a shot before the end of the quarter.

This is why the end of the quarter play cannot have the same efficiency. If there is only 24 seconds left in the quarter, Lou cannot take a shot at any time within those 24 seconds. He is specifically being instructed to take the shot right at the end of the clock with no time left. That's why 50% is good efficiency, because the opposing team knows exactly WHEN he will be shooting.
Game, blouses.

I don't think that this takes into account the times he gets fouled?

I don't mind Lou with the ball, but he shouldn't always be the one to take the shot.

Ross was absolutely on fire Tuesday against the Kings, came up to get the ball and got looked off. I'll take Ross jacking a 3 over anyone else on this roster.

In fact, we should be looking to Ross more for these, period. He's as good as anyone on this team at using his size up dribble to create space for a J.

Is there anyway to compare this to what other teams are doing at the end of quarters? It would be nice to see if the league average FG% or TS% is lower or higher at the end of quarters compared to L Will.

*******For popular demand I have added the amount of time left on the clock for each possession when the Raptors got the ball back. I've broken it down from less than 14 seconds left and more than 14 seconds left as IMO I believe 14 seconds is enough time to run a proper play. I didn't go as far as calculating the averages for points scored with less than 14 seconds vs more than 14 seconds but I may do that later this afternoon.*****

He's become predictable but he's a shot maker and one of the better iso players on our team. I agree that he shouldn't take all of our end of quarter shots but he certainly has a valid claim to at least one a game... and he wont get the last shot of the game which is also important

exactly. when we gave the ball to demar, he defumbled it every time. I'm fine with Lou getting 1 point per shot, I'd also be fine with Lowry taking the shot. Anyone but demar.

yea we really need to draw up some other players and get others involved, may be in the paint too, we have lots of scorers besides lou..... i mean yea most of these quarters we had the lead so it didnt hurt us as much but if we are trailing we should go for a higher percentage shot.

Wouldn't mind seeing our stats in this regard last season.

I think we're better this year - by a large margin.

dTox wrote:Not that this is the right thing to do, but could it be possibly that Casey allows Lou to continuously do this to manage his ego? He's the 2nd best scorer on this team, plays around 21 mpg, giving him the ball in those circumstances validates his importance to the team, and would keep him from complaining about the minutes. This is just speculation on my part

Interesting theory. Possibly true as well.

If that's the case, I'd rather run a play Lou getting a few touchesaat the top of the key or something.

It's that bonafide isolation play with 9 seconds that gives us away

Using Ross would typically be a failure. Once the clock hits five seconds the defender would ramp up the pressure knowing that Ross has terrible handles and would not be able to get the shot as cleanly as he wants.
