MONTANA AND YOUNG PUSHING SHANAHAN

Post#1 » by 49er4life1979 » Mon Dec 29, 2014 1:57 am

According to the Bleacher Report, Joe Montana and Steve Young are pushing for the Niners to hire Mike Shanahan. Any thoughts?

I'm starting to see how much a QB can make or break a coach's career. Nobody would've succeeded w/ RGIII IMO.

I don't want Shanny, but I'd take him and a new QB over my favourite coach & DumbDumb.

I like Shanahan, but I would honestly pick Holmgren over him. Shanny's record post Elway has been below .500...Though he's had multiple playoff runs in Denver post Elway, and one in Washington....Holmgren's record speaks for itself. I like the job he did in Seattle when he was stripped of his GM duties, went to the Super Bowl with a fairly mediocre QB whom he turned into a good one in Matt Hasselbeck.

Keep calling him dumb dumb...You see in the last 2 weeks how much more efficient he looks when it was a power running scheme mixed with some read option.

I'd have a ton to say about it if I was asked but at the very least hiring Shanahan could make it a longer re-build/re-tool than many of the other names that have been thrown around would. You could probably kiss every single current offensive assistant on staff goodbye even if they wanted to stay because I don't see many of them being great fits with Mike and he's been known to stick with guys in his circle. A lot of fans want to see that anyway.

With all of that said, if you gave Shanahan some time, there's a higher chance than many other names that he'd leave you in a better situation with potentially a clearer foundation than many of the other potential names would give you.

Whether it's fair or not I have a hard time listening to former players advocate for a coach being the right fit, or at least one of many good fits, because (insert name here) is somebody they worked with in the past and had success with. It's not completely fair but there's just always been something about it that's bugged me when I hear a lot of former players talk. In this instance, Shanahan wouldn't bother me like some other guys who have had ties to 49ers players would.

I also wonder if Baalke and Shanahan would be a good fit together. I could also see Shanahan wanting Baalke's influence to be reduced and I'm not sure if at this point in his career that Baalke would want to take on somebody like that either.

I ended up saying more about it than I was going to. I have a lot left I could say, too.

If we are going to take a time machine to the past, I'd rather dig up Walsh and prop him up on the sideline.....

Shanahan has been abysmal since Elway retired. How long can a coach ride that? Jesus.

I would like to see Shanahan as HC but not if he wants control over player personnel. I really enjoy reading your thoughts on these things so keep going if you have more to say :)

Shanahan and Holmgren are both well into their 60s.

They should both have plenty of money so where is the drive? Maybe Shanahan is mostly interested in getting his son another job.

Would either man play second fiddle to Jed and Baalke?

No thank you. I don't want a re tread. No holmgren or shsnahan. Honestly fangio would be perfect for this team right now. Straight shooter is what we need. Harbaugh was good to get these guys fired up and happy. But we need a straight shooter no nonsense guy.

Only problem is can fangio put a complete staff together.

Kubiak is my other hopefull. As well as Shawn Peyton if he's canned.

Would also love AZ d coordinator Bowles as s try but it could be hit or miss.

Rex Ryan d coordinator only if fangio gone.

For Holmgren, I think he would really like to coach his hometown team and from what I've heard, he isn't going to just take any HC job out there. I also believe these are highly competitive people that love football. Problem as you mention is whether they would be willing to leave personal decisions up to Balke.

I don't know if I'd categorize Baalke as being somebody who wants to be known as the "first fiddle" or really somebody that wants to be seen first and then heard or even seen AND heard. In many ways I think Baalke would be perfectly fine remaining out of the main spotlight and doing what a general manager with football power does on the football side of things. I hope that makes sense.

Whether or not my feelings end up being proven true or not, right now I don't get the feeling that Jed is so unbelievably hard to work for, makes people kiss his you know what and so forth, and many of the other things that have been assumed by some so far when it comes to Baalke and Jed. I'd feel comfortable saying that Jim had plenty of faults on his side in all of this, too, and in the end both were not good fits for each other in the day-to-day operations unfortunately.

Harbs is crazy....I have no doubt he's deranged when it comes to the game he loves.....too the point it wears on people.

There were reports he needled Manning during their throwing session about his arm being stronger than Peyton's. That's classic Harbs but it rubs a lot of folks the wrong way eventually. It was reportedly part of the reason Manning passed on us.

Second fiddle as in Baalke would have the final say on personnel decisions, whom they draft, whom they'd sign in free agency, whom they'd keep, etc.

Not only second fiddle to Baalke on personnel, maybe even having less say that Paarag, who's not even a football guy but thinks his data analytics can be used to determine who will be good players.

While I wouldn't mind having either of those coaches, I wouldn't want to give them control over personnel decisions and would rather have someone else if either is demanding that. I know Marathe crunches cap numbers but I was not aware he makes those types of player judgements. Not implying he doesn't because I don't know.

Not 100% positive what kind of wording Baalke favors to have in the next HC's contract in terms of the personnel side. I once thought I knew Baalke's feelings on that but right now I'm not as sure so I'm doing what most fans should do and probably not delve into it too much.

And the Paraag thing has been beaten to death since the mid 2000s. The analytics Paraag uses is a system and the markers within that system they use are things that at least 3/4 of the NFL now uses. They've actually begun to rely on it less under Baalke than they did under Nolan and McCloughan and even less than they did prior to that when almost nobody wanted to look at things a little differently. I'd be willing to easily guarantee that the next HC will have far more say to who is added to the roster than Paraag will. As I said, that's been beaten to death in the past and something that has been made clear so many times that it's not even funny.

I don't care how he looked in 2 meaningless games. I've seen plenty to show me he's clueless out there. The dude SUCKS at playing quarterback. If he were on a team like the Dolphins or the Bills he'd be out of the league by now (or a backup somewhere).

In Shannahan's defense, Elway wasn't really that great. Especially in his last couple of seasons.
