That's not what Dragic said a couple weeks ago. And how do we know he doesn't prefer to play point? Every basketball team I've ever played on has been loaded with guys who want to play point.

Fanboys everywhere up in here. His outsize popularity in Phoenix is the biggest reason I could see the Suns keeping him.

Is it your goal to line Sarver's pocket? If it doesn't strap us, and we wouldn't be able to use that free agency to sign someone better, why would you let him walk or trade him for ANOTHER draft pick that isn't all that great? We already have enough young talent and draft picks we can't even find minutes for them.

I also don't think at this point with the impending tv deal and signicant rise in the salary cap that you can compare deals now to other existing deals as a fair comparison. This is likely the last year a starting max for a 9 year player is that low.

i'd think twice before giving Dragic 17 mil, and we should stop thinking that Dragic wouldn't leave the Suns if he gets an offer good enough

if we do sign him for that amount, we should get rid of thomas, and then hope Ennis is ready for back up sg duties

oh no I certainly don't care about sarvers pocket book it's more about flexibility. 17.7 is the 1st yr salary and the suns can offer higher raises that puts him in the 20s by the end of that deal. That's a lot for a guard in his 30s.

You definitely have a point on the rising cap and it would make that number more stomachable.

It's a tough call and not a no brainer either way. Really only the suns fo knows what thy are comfortable paying. All I'm saying is if they aren't comfortable paying him a ton then it does make sense to see what they can get in a trade.

Cap space is what he's after, not $$$. It's a finite resource.

I'm not sure Wes Matthews wouldn't be an upgrade over Dragic for our purposes. I think we can all agree he's not being optimally used with our current system. And I'm not at all convinced that there's demand out there for IT, so trading him may not be an option. Also, it's so unlikely we keep both Gerald and Dragic, so if you want to keep Gerald, maybe you let Dragic go.

Also, "We already have enough young talent" is never the right answer, as far as I can tell.

Wright is attractive as a trade target for two key reasons.

One, he has an expiring $5 million contract, so he is not a long-term burden on the finances of a team plus said team may have the upper hand in re-signing him this summer.

Second, Wright can flat out play. He was getting key minutes in Dallas as Tyson Chandler’s backup and was giving them 8.8 points on 74.8 percent shooting (no, that is not a typo) plus 4 rebounds a game, plus he was a good defensive rim protector as shown by his 1.6 blocks a game. Look at it this way, he had a PER of 25.8 in Dallas.

cosmofizzo wrote:Chris: $17 million? ****. I like the way he's been playing too, but I'm also sensitive to the advanced stats. Dragic is not one of the 6 best guards in the league. He's only arguably the best guard on his own team. He's not a star.

I don't think you're factoring in the "new money"...that Dragic if not spectacular, he's as well-rounded as they get at guard...has been very healthy...and like I wrote- Is headed for a long "prime".

Last three big FA signings-

Klay Thompson 4/70 (17.5m per)
Eric Bledsoe 5/70 (14m per)
Gordon Hayward 4/63 (15.75m per)
Chandler Parsons 3/46 (15.33m per)

I didn't say he WOULD get 17 million, just that it is possible. Again, I think he's worth it because of his overall "package"...value.

Finally. I think he IS a star. Last year he was considered a dark horse for MVP by many including Zach Lowe. 4th, 5th or 6th on the list, but on the list. He would be a star this year save for the situation he's in. And to his credit, he's stayed pretty calm and quiet about it...that's another quality that is going to boost his "number" with GMs this summer

2015 first round draft pick from Minnesota

Minnesota's 1st round pick to Phoenix protected for selections 1-12 in 2015 and 1-12 in 2016; if Minnesota has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Phoenix by 2016, then Minnesota will instead convey its 2016 2nd round pick and 2017 2nd round pick to Phoenix [Minnesota-New Orleans-Phoenix, 7/27/2012]

Wow. Pretty much getting Wright for free:
The protection on the TWolves pick:
First round pick (from Timberwolves) (protected top 13 in 2014, top 12 in 2015-16, else 2016 and 2017 second round picks)

I love the Wright pickup. The guy was really good for the Mavericks. Low risk high reward situation. I am excited. I wonder what else is on the horizon.
