Dante Exum having worst rookie season since Austin Rivers

Post#1 » by orlandomanic » Sun Feb 22, 2015 4:45 am

Exum rookie season 4.7ppg, 2.3apg, 1.2 turnovers, .345FG%
Rivers rookie season 6.2ppg, 2.2apg, 1.2 turnovers, .372FG%

Exum is on pace to having the worst rookie season in NBA history, surpassing Austin Rivers' rookie season in numbers and efficiency, with at least averaging over 20 minutes per game.

Wiggins, Parker, Aaron Gordon, and Exum are all age 19, but Exum is by far having the worst season of the 19yr old who got drafted.

Every draft has their Darko, Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Shaun Livingston, Jonathan Bender, Yi Jianlian, Evan Turner, Jan Vesely. Will Exum be the bust of this draft?

Everyone knew Exum would not be good this year. He was 18 yrs old when he was drafted, coming out of Australian High School. Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey even said last night that Dante is just a "placeholder" when he's out on the court. He's pretty much just out there to push the ball up the court, which he's decent at, and to play defense (which he is surprisingly good at). He's a project pick who is 2 or more years away.

I'm not worried about him, if we weren't tanking he would be in the d league, and he is starting.

He's not even the worst rookie in this class. Stauskas has been worse.

You're right, Elfrid Payton is having a way better rookie season.

That's what you wanted to hear right?

Stauskas is only averaging 12 minutes per game..... but ya, Nik does look like a career scrub.

Exum is going to be fine. He is one hell of a massive project though. Its going to take at least 2-3 years before anyone can label him a bust. Think Jermaine O'Neal. Crappy analogy im sure, but it took him a while.

When Exum was drafted, people knew he was going to be raw. Just read his draft report:

We have seen enough of Exum to know that he is one of the best under-20 players in the world, but he still has quite a ways to go before becoming a star in the NBA… The areas that he needs to focus on are his ball-handling, decision-making, and outside shooting, especially if he wants to reach his goal of being a Derek Rose-like point guard… The potential is there, so much so, that he will likely be drafted ahead of a number of players who are more NBA-ready.

So ball-handling, decision-making, and outside shooting were his weaknesses coming in, and still are his weaknesses right now. He's extremely young and will undoubtedly improve in those areas. Nobody expected him to come in and dominate, the fact that he isn't great player immediately isn't surprising and was actually expected.

what constitutes "worst". you mean to say no rookie has averaged less than 4.7ppg and under .345%. i guess exxum needs a daddy coach

Nope. Here are the RPM rankings for five 19 year old rookies. Exum isn't close to the worst, and is
above average for a rookie. I would list all the rookies but this thread will probably be locked
before I could look them up.

Andrew Wiggins 196
Dante Exum 272
Aaron Gordon 372
Jabari Parker 444
Zach Levine 457 (dead last)

I think this is proof of just how good Exum has been defensively. He has really been a huge surprise defensively with his quickness and length. Offensively right now he's like a crappier shooting Bruce Bowen.

Have we forgotten about Nick Stauskas?

He's 1/18 over his last 9 games.

Impressive!

LaVine is rated higher then him because he has some sweet dunks.

Exum came out of australian high school level basketball. Which is utter trash. And was always earmarked as a project. And getting minutes purely for defense and the jazz need for perimeter d.

What the hell do you want from him? Every scout in the nba/anyone with half a thought knew he would be raw as hell in his first two years and wrote him off as not being a consistant preformer.

There are worse rookies getting gametime from the draft. The hack from sac town and Lavine. Lavine also projected to do sweet F all this year

I don't really see how Stauskas could continue to be such a bad 3pt shooter. It has to improve I would think. He was a prolific shooter before the NBA.

Neither Exum or Rivers have been the 'worst' rookies to play the game. Nonsense.

This is the dumbest post so far.

LaVine - 21 minutes/7.6 points/3.2 assist/1.8 turn overs/0.9 steals

they both average 21 mintues and LaVine beat Ex in every catagory except for turn overs.
