6/2006: Oleksiy Pecherov will be "a tougher, more physical version of Dirk"

6/2007: Nick Young will be "a perennial All-Star who will make us old timers forget Dr. J"
6/2011: Jan Vesely will "come into the NBA with a work ethic reminiscent of Bird and Jordan"
Regarding my prediction that the Wizards would become "the NBA's model franchise" under the leadership of Susan O'Malley as GM and Ed Tapscott as head coach--this has not come to fruition, due to a lack of vision on the part of Ted Leonsis.
Ah.. the good ol days. I used to love pumping up young Dray as KG Jr...
Then we had the summer of 7DayDray and hope was in the air. And if you think about it, it was kind of interesting. Dray was actually trying to become the S4 type. He just dribbled to much and never improved enough from range but he would actually take and make some 3s. His combination of size with some handles was promising. To bad his work ethic wasn't there. But once in a while he would go on a tear and dominate.
Dude had potential. He just never grow up and became a professional. That taught me a lot about evaluating young talent. So did McGee. So did Nick.
Now I think some of it is a chicken and the egg thing. Knuckleheads like that can make it if they come to the right situations regarding culture and opportunity, and get mentored well. But the Wizards was pretty much the opposite of that. Specially with Gil here. AJ and CB tried to get the team to be more professional, but Gil was the featured talent here and he was an admitted clown who sadly became more about Gil, attention and money then winning basketball. And its hard to counter that. That too was sad because Gil started off with a ton of promise. Much like Wall. Wall developed properly. Gil went off the reservation.
I like the new direction with players like Wall, Beal and Otto and solid vets is the better design. The stink of how this franchise was has washed away a great deal. People might have forgotten how bad it was. Its tons better now.
At least from here I can envision them being able to attract the top valuable front office and coaching help. I don't think that was the case when Ted took over or when Abe originally fired MJ or EG.
