Shawn Jones looked lost last time in preseason but if he keeps improving I would give him another shot. He seems like a poised guy, tries every night despite being in the d league but he is undersized... Gah

Jones are Birch are not undersized, they're simply PF's. If they had legit Center size they would have been drafted. They're trying to to expand their games so they'll be able to play as a NBA PF offensively.

Jones is Haslem, and id argue against him being lost in preseason. We kept wanting him to clear the paint but his game is meant to be inside; in addition he was clearly too excited. Skyforce lets him play inside. I like Jones way more than Birch as a 8th or 9th guy for a team.
1. Herro 2. Bol Bol 3. Seko 4. Bruno
unless we trade up for Barrett or trade down for PJ Washington

Found this article on the front page, hope nobody has posted it yet. This seemed like the best spot for it:

http://basketball.realgm.com/analysis/2 ... -15-Season

Hassan is obviously the best call up from the D-league.....ever. There were some nice performances from the D-leaguers this year. Covington played very well for Philly. Its good to see the farm league doing what it's supposed to.

We have 3 guys from the top 6, pretty cool.

Jones and Birch could be next. Although they're not playing the position we really need.

Yeah, I thought it was nice to get recognized. I hope we will be able to fill our holes through the draft, and if that's the case, then we likely won't be flirting with the D-league too much in the future. It has done a wonderful job plugging holes for us this year, after every offseason name we signed was shipped off or injured.

Haslem is/was reliable from midrange. Last I checked, Jones has shown nothing from that area. He might be rugged down low with a 7'3.5 wingspan (impressive for a player 6'8), but he'll need something from midrange if he's to be Haslem's protege. Same goes for Birch. At 6'9, 105 lbs, he's never going to play center in the NBA. He might be a shotblocker, but so was Jarvis Varnado. He needs something other than being tall and skinny to merit a permanent call-up. He doesn't have that yet. He's not bouncy-athletic to make up for his slight build, either. What else is there? I really don't know.

Jones is developing a 15-18ft shot though. Much better than the beginning of the season.

Shaquille O'Neal's son Shareef is a 6'8 high school freshman.

Daddy was about the same height at that age, but not as mobile as Junior is.

This is incredible. Could you imagine what this kid could become if he tops out at around seven feet?

I hear Shawn Jones was impressive at the d-league combine. I hope he's not looking to leave our farm system. Fuquan Edwin must not see a future with us, as he has agreed to play summer league for New Orleans.

At the D-league Elite camp Shawn Jones measured in at 6'6" without shoes and 6'7.5" with shoes.
He also has a freakish 7'4" winspan.
8'10" standing reach.
30.5 inch no step vert.
39 inch max vert.

There always was something about Shawn Jones that picked my interest. I knew he needed a lot of development, especially to compensate for his lack of height but IMO, he makes the NBA as role player faster than Birch in the near future.

Of course, I could always be wrong...

I was updating your numbers. Draftexpress wrote an article comparing previous measurements of players to what they are at now and Jones was a part of the study. He came in shorter than before, but his wingspan is half an inch more. His no step vert went down 3 inches. Draftexpress suspects that players train specifically for the combine testing and then never do those drills again, which could cause the drop in no step vert. His max vert is crazy though. He's a high flyer.

He's not going to get drafted so why not pick him up for D-League?

Sadly these type of guys never pan out. Every year you hear about some African/Eastern/Indian giant trying to make it, but There is such a thing as being too big for BB.

Guys that are truly over 7'0" barefoot very rarely make it, the ones that did were really skilled or athletic freaks :

Shaq - Freak
Big Z - very skilled, very thin
Yao - broke down
Bynum - broke down
Hasheem Thabeet - busted

Can't really think of anyone else in the modern era.

Still, since he's only 19 YO it's worth a gamble. But it's a long shot to say the least.

Phenomenal size. And I'm even more impressed by his shooting form. I would love to have him in Sioux Falls, but I don't think this guy knows how many years it may take to develop. He would probably leave after a year to make more money overseas. He might have some family depending on him (like Ennis did) and he just can't play for 25k.

Return to Miami Heat
