Re: Off Topic VII
I also got a nice laugh out the Hurney vs. Gettleman argument. Gettleman is still paying for Hurney's cap hell. Yeah we had some space this year, but the NFL has a hard cap. As in, under no circumstances can you exceed it. Basically the opposite of the NBA cap with its various exceptions.
Teams will also lose space after cuts. It's a bit more complicated than this, but basically during the offseason only 51 contracts count, but once the season starts ALL of your contracts count. In the NBA, if you spend all your money you can still sign guys for the minimum. Not so in the NFL, once it's spent you're out of luck. Used your cap space up and just lost a guy to a torn ACL? Tough ****, you're playing down a man. You're gonna lose several players due to injury, so you have to keep some money stored away to pay for replacements.
Gettleman's first two drafts netted us 8 starting-level players out of 11 picks, not to mention he brought in undrafted guys like Philly Brown, Andrew Norwell, Wes Horton, Melvin White, and Robert Lester.
Meanwhile, Hurney had a recent 3-year stretch from 2009-11 where only 1 guy stuck. AND HE WAS THE **** NUMBER ONE PICK. One guy...out of 25 picks.

I believe you forgot the word "here". It should say only one guy stuck here. A number of the guys from those drafts are playing other places and some are starting there. 3-7 picks from 2009 nine started at least one game last year while 5 from 2010 started last season at least once. So yes he had a rough stretch but he also did not do as bad as it looks when you only see who is left on our team. Every guy has some bad seasons and 2011 other than Cam was one. Again I am not saying Hurney was a great GM but just that Gettleman is not a great one either.

I think we could really improve the results of the draft period if we can land Collins. At least that way we will have a first round prospect in our fold.

Nope. Very disappointed in Gettleman, not that it is a shocker he failed here.

Re: Off Topic VII
Dallas basically got 3 first round talents this year without making a single trade. Baggage or not, that must be nice.

I don't know if it's necessarily his fault. It very well could be but no one knows that. We were never reported to be a team that Collins was interested in.
And we tend to completely shy away from players with off the field red flags. That comes from Richardson.

I really feel agents and players do not like dealing with Gettleman. There have been many rumors about how he has treated players here and his disrespect to agents. We were not going to dollar store shop this year, according to him, and yet we had to again. I do not think we are a desirable place to go because of him and it hurts us. No way that Turner reaches out without the approval from the top and yet we still got blanked.
In this case we were a better chance for him to play OT which is a more highly paid position long term and we had a friend of his that he mentioned getting advice from going into the combine. That we could not even get him in for a visit like this is very telling to me. He is a terrible face for our franchise on the management side and it is going to cost us long term.

Re: Off Topic VII
I just completely disagree with that take. Fortunately the season will bear it out. I expect us to fight for the top of our division and would be disappointed if we are not in the playoffs.
jdm, if we make the playoffs (yet again), work out an extension with Cam, have a surprisingly productive and deep rookie class (yet again), and continue to improve on the field as a team while making prudent cap decisions, would that be enough to change your opinion of him?

Dallas has a loaded O-Line. Im disappointed we didn't get him I dont care about the "red flag" he wasn't a suspect this was a no risk-very high reward move. If it turns out he was involved just cut him.

Re: Off Topic VII
I mean pretty much every NFL team was going after him - it's on twitter that reportedly 26 teams were pursuing him. I don't understand why we are uniquely at fault for not landing him.
Also, after reading some of the snippets from his press conference, sounds like he completely bought in to what Dallas was selling.

Re: Off Topic VII
I dont think players dont sign here because of the GM. They rarely (if ever) interact with him during the season, if it was a coach problem then i could see it but not a GM.
I think he has done well outside the Steve Smith situation. I want to see what he can do when we aren't in cap hell.
I think Collins signed for 1.7 million, do we even have that much cap space?

Re: Off Topic VII
Maybe because he is good friends with a player on our team and we had a better opportunity to start at OT where he could earn more money long term. Gettleman developed a bad reputation in his dealing with Smith, Gross and a few of the others and it costs us. We were a better option and should have had an inside track here and yet Gettleman screwed it up.
To answer your question we need to make the playoffs and have back to back winning seasons. Winning the division is a year that was historically bad is not a big accomplishment. He has to show that he knows how to deal with people. The guys we draft have to come here and Cam is in a rough spot leaving wise. He is a terrible person to deal with and that hurts and I do not see any other way to see it than that. Just look at his history here and how players react to coming here. I honestly cannot see how anyone can not watch him and say man he is horrible at HALF of his job. There is a reason he was shoved in a dark closet in the back of NY Giants stadium and passed by Ross in the pecking order. He does not have the people skills to handle his job.

We could have offered the exact same deal he got there and more chance at playing time at OT. The GM negotiates all contracts and deals with restructures and everything else. They are who agents and players have to do business with and being a POS like he has shown to be with these guys it will turn them away. Half the job is this sort of stuff and he is as bad at that as anyone I have seen.

Trai Turner tried to recruit Collins. The chances of him coming here were very, very remote.

Why?
We offer immediate playing time as he would be the top OT on our roster and it would not even be close and we had a guy who he trusted so much he sought out his advice going into the process. We are a team built on running the football and playing good defense which is what he is best at. We should have been high on his list unless there is something holding our team back. HMM, wonder what that could be.

Re: Off Topic VII
Gettleman ranked 9th as far as GM's go on rotoworlds top GM list.
9. Dave Gettleman, Panthers
Last Year’s Ranking: 14
Dave Gettleman’s predecessor Marty Hurney believed in one thing — making running backs rich. That, and a draft “strategy” which once called for trading a future first-rounder for the No. 43 overall pick left Gettleman with a cupboard that achieved the rare feat of being not only bare, but ruinously expensive. It limited Gettleman to two years of dollar-store shopping — two years that also produced back-to-back playoff appearances, and the first repeat champions in the history of the NFC South. Gettleman’s rabbit/hatting of an overextended roster has laid the foundation for a bright future, and left behind the funds to lock up cornerstones Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly. A solid drafter who has avoided free-agent mistakes — Michael Oher will test this in 2015 — Gettleman hasn’t been flashy, but he’s been the kind of solid Carolina desperately needed in the post-Hurney era.

Yeah and Clifford was a top ten coach last year. These things tend to be wrong quite often. He ranks in the bottom half in my book and was the wrong hire out of the guys we brought in here.
