I actually think the Porzingis pick says they have chosen. I think they keep Melo for the coming year to keep some interest in the team, but I think in 2016 they offer him to teams that miss out on KD the other big names available.
I don't blame them, they had to finally do a true rebuild at some point. It just feels like Phil pulled a bait-and-switch on Melo and the city. Good thing Melo has his $120M to dry his tears.

I agree he was the right pick, but my thinking about Phil's thinking is - They're not going to pick Mudiay because he doesn't fit the triangle (being a PG with a questionable jumper), and Winslow's not a great fit, so none of the choices available would likely help right away, so why not go with the player with the best upside and best trade value.
But if they do look to trade Melo, and go full rebuild, Washington will get mentioned, and Oubre would be a really good fit for NY. He could fit in the triangle, and his length would remind Phil of a guy named da Pip. And those Nene and Webster contracts find a use. I'm definitely not suggesting it, but I could see it.
