a small market overpay to either of those guys is bat sht crazy. if were gonna sign either of those guys it needs to be on a value deal if they somehow fall thru the cracks.
16 million in space. either absorb players for picks and youth or try and be the last man standing with space to try and get a guy who got bypassed to sign for less than market on a shorter term deal. and make a move for that guy regardless of position.
we do NOT have to target need with our current roster composition. use this money for best available player at best dollar only imo. the goal with our money should be to create more assets at the lowest risk possible of any longterm liability or loss of flexibility..... even with the larger cap coming up.
Nobody is falling through the cracks this year with the looming cap situation. We will all soon be freaking out at the numbers we will be paying in free agency.
The free agents are like homes in a sellers market. You'll get multiple offers on your home the day it goes up for sale and it will take a bid over asking price for someone to get it.
this is the year that it is most likely somebody falls thru the cracks.
with the new salary cap looming, teams will be spending with no conscience. but this year the old salary cap will still in place. that's a perfect recipe for having a 2nd tier guy left over more than any other time in history. maybe its a chandler. maybe its a wes Mathews.... who knows who it will be? but the goal is to find a millsap player/contract because nobody else has even that money left to burn.
so next year I agree with you it will be impossible to find a value. but this year.... as teams spend like crazy initially and space fills up fast..... our goal should be to be the team with the most available space left at some point in july. at that point we look around at whats left and make a lowball offer better than anybody else can. its literally as simple as that.
option b of course is just to offer our space to others once theirs is all gone elsewhere. I guarantee there is still gonna be guys who haven't been paid what their asking in mid july. we either lowball them or offer our space to somebody else to pay thru the nose. I do not want to use this space for the names/contracts being thrown around right now. value deals sure..... small market premiums at this point in our teams evolution can gtfo.
