Finally someone else realizes this...the 7.5 mil is an AVERAGE and probably not ACTUALLY what's being paid this season...same as Carroll's 15 is just an AVERAGE but could work out to being 10, 15, 17.5, 17.5 meaning we have a lot more cap space.

No, it can't work that way. The NBA has rules concerning maximum annual pay raises.

I think a lot of people are thinking, "dude was a 3rd stringer for the Spurs, he can't be that good", which is understandable as a fan, but it's false IMO, and Ujiri isn't stupid enough to give him that type of money without doing the proper research. A lot of execs have been reported to be high on Cojo, IIRC.

Pop loves Joseph, too, and you can't ignore how he learned to play in a great system on a championship team, it's a huge asset to have for a player's mentality IMO.

Another solid deal.

When a player is as young as Cojo, you have to pay not just for what they've done but also their potential going forward. He's already a really solid player, and if can refine his offensive game he's a potential starter down the road. $7.5M for that is fair when the cap is going to ~$100M.

It's pretty clear Masai will be trading for a PF. No idea who that will be, but preferably a good rebounder and shot blocker. We don't need much offense from the starting PF.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

It's not gona hurt so much when the new cap hits, but we can only keep saying that for so many contracts. We now have two contracts that are brutal at today's cap, but are more manageable later. We can't keep going down this road with overpaying everyone by about $2 million a year, especially when DeMar and JV are going to be demanding $20+M contracts down the road.

If we ever win 50+ games for an entire decade, then we'll start to get sweetheart deals too.

Well this is a depressing way to look at the Raptor's future.

What's your point? Expecting to get players on massive bargains is unreasonable.

Green left at least 20 million the table, apparently, so ya, not really comparable lol.

If Green left 20 on the table, his agent should fire himself. He looks better than he actually is because he is in the Spurs system.

Just like all the role players that go through the Spurs team.

Before some of these signings I was pushing for the Ross for PF trade, but it looks like we're going to need 3 point shooting badly so I don't imagine we'll deal him. We're going to have insane court spacing issues without Ross.

what options did we have? Enlighten me. David West? Were you going to acquire a PF via cap space? If so who?

Was it not the whole point of drafting Wright that he was NBA ready right now? So now he's either a redundant piece, or an excuse for more small-ball.

As for PF... if they couldn't get any of the big names, there are guys like Darrell Arthur still out there who are serviceable players.

He can shoot it pretty well in stretches, but as I said earlier, he's reluctant to shoot it, which really hurts his ability to play off the ball, especially on a team like the Spurs.

You'll see a lot of Joseph passing up 3s and stalling the offense when he's in one of his "low confidence" zones.

I feel the same way I did with the Caroll signing, love the player but iffy on the contract. Still I'm happy to see how defensive minded this team is going to be, watching gv/lou was driving me crazy.

You can say that about any player, especially DeMarre Carroll.

At the end of the day, he can knock down 3s and he can defend individually and as part of a team. Those skills are going for $15M per year apparently (Carroll, Middleton).

The Spurs "system" thing is really overblown. It took the Spurs 4 or 5 years to find Green after Bowen declined. The system is nice, but you need players, the Spurs weren't winning anything when they had Jefferson/Bogans/Mason/Blair/McDyess/Bonner and a bunch of other experiments rather than Leonard, Green and Splitter in the starting lineup lol.
