It's taking all my mental fortitude to not start quoting myself all over on this thread because of a couple SL games.

Russell will be fine.

But damn, ALL the concerns about his athleticism have been spot on so far.

And Mudiay looks like a pro already.

Like I said before, the key for Russ to be a star in the league is if he can translate smoothly in the NBA playing PG.

His problem is still the inability to consistently breakdown the defense and get to the heart of the defense like Mudiay. Thus, he needs to take risks and do some creative passes (longer the length of pass higher the chances of being a TO).

Russell seems like the game is going to fast. Once he settles down I think he will be fine. I still don't think he will be better than Mudiay but I still expect him to be very good. I just think he will take too many contested shots though. He's not quick enough to get multiple clean looks.

It's not the athleticism, because he's got an impressive vert. It's really in the fundamental of his dribble.

He's quick and athletic. But he is slow and unathletic with the ball in his hands.

Look at it this way, when Mudiay has the ball he looks like a 6'3 PG out there (looks like slightly bigger Bledsoe). He's dribbles low that allows him to shift in speed and direction easily. But Russell looks like a tall 6'7-6'9 guard when he has the ball (slightly smaller Lamar Odom?), so in theory, it's easy to swipe the ball when he gets to the lane, that's why he needs to settle for the pull-ups (nearer the rim, higher rate for TO).

I see two outcomes..
1.) play offball
this hides the problem with his handling, while put his passing and shooting at the spotlight. This also let him focus more on getting good looks at the perimeter which he isn't getting with the ball at his hands.
2.) simplify the game
A good PG he can imitate is Conley. Conley's game is low in showmanship and it's focus on simplicity and efficiency. Space out the floor, don't force the issue, be a solid PnR player, facilitate by making simple passes & use that length and speed on the defensive end.

I'm still teamRussell..
not worried about him at all.. Summer league Lakers ball totally different from in season basketball. He wont have the ball in his hands nearly as much and will primary start his career off as Derek Fisher.. 2-years from now with Kobe totally finished is when he will need to step up.

It's just Summer League, but coupled with the Embiid news, I'd be freaking out about Russell if we had drafted him.

Probably Mudiay's worst game so far.

Still on board with Angelo Russell = Protectors of the Flat Earth Society

Just going based on summer league(I know) I'd rank them:

Towns, Okafor, Porzingis, Russell

Towns didn't put up the numbers Okafor did, but you can just see his skills.

There are a few more worth mentioning based on SL.

Okafor, Towns, Porzingas, Muiday, StanJo, Winslow, (Super Mario "edit"), Grant, (Oubre "edit")... Russell (sinking "edit")

He needs to focus playing off ball if his PG skills don't translate in the NBA. I think he'd be fine as a way better passer version of Reddick/RIP Hamilton for now.

Can Russell get his shot over wing players though, and can he move good off-ball? Also even jj reddick can penetrate the defense and finish.
