Ernie gets exposed every year during this team. I dont think he has a clue on how to function in this environment..and yet he still runs an NBA franchise

I just checked the rosters of every NBA team, the Wizards are the only team in the NBA that do not have a young/developing player in their front court, Zero.

Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing (Part 2)
EFG has topped himself with this DUDley trade for player with a back injury, evidently a fetish that Ernie has.

Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing (Part 2)
Was it here we were discussing Ernie's aversion to R2 picks?
I thought of it as I realized how many R2 or undrafted guys this year got multiple fully-guaranteed years on 4 year contracts w/ team options in the last (or last 2) years: Jordan Mickey, Richaun Holmes, Rakeem Christmas, Jonathon Holmes (undrafted), Josh Richardson, Joseph Young, Scottie Wilbekin (undrafted), Anthony Brown (3 years), Maurice Ndour (undrafted -- 3 years 1.5 guaranteed), and a couple of others I've missed.
Some other R2/undrafteds (Robert Upshaw, Cliff Alexander, etc.) have also made teams (but w/ contracts that resemble those of previous years).
Thoughts...?

I'm sure NBA teams have more info on Upshaw than we do, and it makes sense that GMs are risk averse, but sometimes there's a fine line between risk averse and being a coward. I would have signed him. Actually, I would have used our 2nd rounder on him. From the interview up on draftexpress, he's not a moron, he knows he made his bed and how to fix it. You just don't find many players that size that have skills and can actually play. Sure, he's a risk - but his contract with LAL is NOT a risk. He's getting league miniumum (only partially guaranteed this season), and his 2nd year has nothing guaranteed.

This is an interesting trend that makes a lot of sense. Rather than pay journeyman players more $ to warm the bench or play spot minutes, make and a small, non-guaranteed investment in overlooked players who look they could easily be drafted in a draft re-do and be total steals for the team. The best values to be had are at the Guard and Forward positions
Our Ernest is a retread player guy all the way, who is around? who is available? not "hey, this guy may be worth giving a shot-to on a non-guaranteed deal.

I think part of this might be in anticipation of the jump in the cap. If you can have a productive guy or two locked in at a bargain rate - that can allow you to make better use of your cap space. Even if cap space isn't terrible important to the team, a bargain contract can greatly increase a player's trade value.

I wonder if being a former player make EG(and some other GMs) more likely to sign a re-tread than GMs with other back-grounds.

Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing (Part 2)
EG just got out-smarted & checked. Wells will be part of the OKC camp whether he makes the team out-right or not. Per the article,
OKC will stash Wells with their D-League team if they don't have space.Meanwhile Durant has a local buddy on the team.
Next-year what will Ernie do? Look around to see who is available. EG always wraps-up his summer quickly.
Just a little baseless speculating on a slow news day

I was thinking something similar -- if you have to eat a couple of cheap contracts, the rise in the cap will make that less of a problem. Lowers the cost of taking a risk.

Verbal8 -- It's just a feeling, but I'm convinced that's true. I think a lot of the bad decisions guys like Ernie make reflect this background. Glad you brought it up.
It'd be interesting to run some regressions on GM backgrounds and effectiveness. You'd have to run some on age as well.
I don't think it's an easy job being a GM, and there's more to it than picking players: you do have to manage a complex operation and a bunch of people. Still, if you aren't particularly good at picking players no other talents can make up the deficit.

FAH1223, with Millie's thread approaching a reboot at 100, could you rename this thread something similar to his thread?

And makes so much damn sense. Ferry's obvious ties to DC (Dematha alum) and the organization (his dad, former GM Bob); Ferry's recent track record of rebuilding a perpetually mediocrity treadmill team into an East power; his ties to San Antonio. He's the right combo of "old school former player" with modern outside-the-box thinking.
It makes tons of sense -- so it obviously won't happen.

Hire CCJ, nate, and TSW as GM.
Hire PIF as the negotiator. He will bore the other GMs to death. "Fine, you can have Cousins for Porter and a protected 2nd rounder, just promise to never call me again."
