With that pitching staff, the Nats should be much better. Only one game over .500 now and 8 1/2 games behind the red hot Cubs for the rights to lose to the Pirates

This may be one of the most odd regular seasons I can recall in a while...

- The Cardinals have a pitching staff that can blow anyone away, it seems, but no one in their regular lineup is batting over .300. The Pirates and Cubs might just be the second and third best teams in the entire league, but they can't catch the Cards.

- The Dodgers and Giants are doing their regular "Are we good or not?" act before September when they both figure it out.

- The Mets... seriously, the goddamn Mets, are pulling away in a division that is underachieving, to be kind.

- The Yankees/Jays race is actually real because the Yankees choose not to hit on days of the week that end in "y."

- And, the Astros and Angels are trying their hardest to see who can suck more to let the Rangers back into the race for the AL West.

The only absolutely sure thing is the Royals, and I'm still not totally sold on them making another WS run because, after Cueto, I don't think their rotation is good enough.

Absolutely love the fact that the Nats might miss the playoffs after all that preseason hype. I don't dislike the mets as much as I do the Nats and Phillies.

It's even more sad that the Nats have a .247 team batting average even with one of the best hitters in the game. Imagine their average without Harper's .328... Pitiful

Rendon and Werth just got back recently. I didn't expect them to come out of the gate with hot bats. They're not that far away from the Mets. If those guys pick it up and help out Harper in September, I don't see why they can't catch the Mets. They have what? 6 more games against the Mets?

We just don't look like we have any fight in us. Nobody but Harper is hitting and even he's not hitting with any real power recently(only like 3 homers post ASB). I mean the Mets get swept at home but we don't make up any ground. The star studded pitching staff has been terrible recently besides Stras.

With all that said, the last time we were 4.5 back was in May, and two weeks later we were in sole possession of first place. We gotta win 4/6 at least of the remaining games vs. the Mets and hope to make up the other two games somewhere else. We both have easily schedules left but we get a lot more home games while the Mets are on the road a lot(and they are a bad road team). Then again we had the DBacks and Rockies at home and lost 4/7 so who knows...

i live in LA and watch almost all the dodgers games that arent on at the same time the giants play. while i'm no dodger fan, i don't consider myself a hater and have become fascinated with some aspects of the team

i truly think they are (for the time being) a regular season team. they have so much talent and depth at pretty much every position as well as 2 historically good aces and kind of a mini-mariano in jansen. with all that $$$ on the roster they simply destroy sub500 teams, particularly any team in the division not named the giants. when they face other better teams besides the nationals they fold.

watching pre and post game interviews with the players it seems like the dodgers dont "get up" for tough matchups and instead play it off. most the dodgers also seem to downplay the giants rivalry

reasons dodgers are unlikely to get deep in the playoffs
1) horrible bullpen. jansens good, but closers are overrated imo and while baez, garcia, and others show flashes theyre just as likely to implode
2) good hitting depth, but no real "franchise player" level hitter. gonzalez cant beat shifts, puig swings at every slider, ethier can only hit against lefties, etc. theyre best hitter imo is justin turner who in a small (but growing) sample size has shown he is really good
3) playing the deep ball: the dodgers i think are first in the NL in homeruns by a good margin. in the playoffs i'd much rather prefer my team to be hitting smart and inside.
4) unclutchness. particularly kershaw and puig

still, they have stuff going for them - especially the infinite $ cheat they have going on. im kind of scared of how good corey seager is going to become. a lot of nonbiased scouts tout him a lot.

Fair criticisms.

There's a number of reasons I can haggle with a couple of them. But I wont in the interest of not being long winded and having clutter ITT. They're fair and we'll just have to see how it plays out.

Only reason it's close is because of all those one run games the Jays lost early in the year. Otherwise, they would have a 10+ game lead in the division right now.

I don't see how the Dodgers lose to anyone in a best of 5 with Kershaw/Grienke pitching twice each.

The Jays have led the majors in run differential all season. They have a 73-46 pythagorean record (second only to the Cards). This recent run isn't an outlier. The offence has been just as good all season while the pitching staff was underperforming before (and is overperforming now). This team has just been statistically unlucky with all the one run losses.
