No, they do. It's all out there digitally somewhere. Most, if not all the carriers will give them to you but you have to ask in writing, not even electronically. You have to send a physical letter. Pay a fee and there is other criteria like the letter has to be a certain way and registered or something. Every text you've ever made can be retrieved depending on the extent and cost you want to go through.. and, of course, having the proper warrants, or subpoena and authority to demand them.
You're right about the NSA though.
and yeah, they have it too.. and so does the CIA, FBI, and Dept of Justice and Homeland Security. Not they are all monitoring all of our texts or anything, they aren't unless you are being watched or investigated. But, they all have access to it all.
