was having a **** today and thinking about the league (yes, I was thinking about it during summer, I guess I really like it) and came up with an idea concerning the draft. as we all know, some like the draft, some don't particularly as you're basically forced to spend money on a player that you might have otherwise not signed.
how about we take a page out of real life NBA draft second round rules and not force teams to sign players?
idea 1) team's have a certain time period (let's say one week after the draft) to sign their draft picks to the rookie scale we already have created. if a team decides not to sign the player, it still maintains the rights to the player (let's say it expires before the next summer's free agency begins) and can sign him during the season for that same amount of pre-determined money. the other 9 teams can approach the player like a restricted free agent. per example, Team X decides in January that it wants to sign the rookie and then has to notify the board (and the other team personally). Team X would also have to pay the rookie according to the rookie scale, while Team Y (who holds the rights to the player) has 72 hours to match or allow the signing to happen declining their rights.
(wrinkle that we could also adopt under this scenario - the rights to a player would be a trade-able asset. under this scenario it would be more fun that rights to a player last forever. imagine someone throwing in the rights to Frank Kaminsky in a trade in 2018)
idea 2) we full-on replicate the NBA second round model and allow teams to sign the drafted rookies to unguaranteed deals. you can cut them and not face any cap space related consequences. deals become guaranteed on January, the 9th. this seems like less fun but would also solve the issue of teams being burdened by contracts they didn't want. it would create some fun though if one kept the unguaranteed rookie around for trade purposes and then waived his contract around in late December as a contract that can give you more cap space.
idea 3) that I just thought of. we combine these two ideas into one. you can either flat-out sign the rookie, sign him to an unguaranteed deal or not sign him at all, yet maintain rights to him. actually.. what's not to like about this?
