I Started an NBA History Podcast. Have Had Three Former Players as Guests

Post#1 » by LamarMatic7 » Mon Sep 28, 2015 9:19 pm

So I have recently started a basketball history podcast on which I'll mainly speak with former NBA players about their careers. At this point I have had Tracy Murray, Jim McIlvaine and Chucky Brown on as guests. Also did a special episode with Hornets announcer Steve Martin. I thought that I could post this on the General Board for the people who like the league's days of the past.

You can keep up with the episodes through http://lamarmatic.com . Obviously, iTunes is also an option:
https://itunes.apple.com/lv/podcast/the-handle/id1037910919

For you to see some snippets of interviews and what the conversations are like, here is some stuff from my newest podcast with Chucky Brown. As a 13-year NBA veteran he had some fun stories about the league, namely on the Spurs and Tim Duncan, and the Rockets and Hakeem.

All the info and additional show notes concerning that episode are here:
http://lamarmatic.com/2015/09/28/the-handle-podcast-chucky-brown-92815/

With me having done highlights of 80s and 90s NBA for some time on YouTube, I really enjoyed talking to Tracy Murray. He had a great memory and could, per example, remember his 50-point game very well. It was so cool that I could make accompanying highlights for that excerpt of the interview:

I hope that the mods have no problem with me posting this here as it's off-season anyway. If it's considered to be some bad form of self-promotion I'm sorry and I will not do this again.

Cheers!

The key is to contact players that have never been asked to be interviewed before.

Great idea, will definitely follow this. Your should try and get Mike James on haha, he's been all over the place and would probably have some great stuff.

By simply asking. I send out an email or a tweet and just see what happens. It's like - what's the worst thing that could happen.. If someone doesn't reply, move on.

great job dude. just gained another listener!

Edit* also If you keep this on the right track with sponsorship etc. watch it in 3-5 yrs you will be competing for big name interviews with the likes of major sports networks and personality. traditional media is struggling and guys like you are giving us what the fans want.

keep it up pal.

I understand that your comment is meant to be tongue-in-cheek (or at least I hope so and that it isn't primary meant to be malicious), but I still decided to elaborate a bit on it.

First off, yeah, these guys weren't superstars and with me being a newbie I have relatively little chances of landing perennial all-stars on my podcast.

Second off, they still were NBA players and those who are interested in NBA history are still able to learn a lot from them. Being a great player doesn't always mean that one is a great interviewee. Tracy Murray was an awesome speaker and he, perhaps, can tell a story much better than most of the league's stars could.

And, third off, if you played in the NBA (and played hundreds of games like these guys) there's no reason for us as basketball fans not to respect them. If I'm curious about the 90-91 season's Team X and some guy earned his right to play for that team, I'll happily have him on the podcast. Even if he averaged 4 points and didn't play more than 82 games in his NBA career.

But, yeah, I get the joke and I hope that it's all in good fun. Just wanted to comment and explain my mindset.

Thanks to everyone who dropped an appreciative comment! I hope that you'll like both my future and past work.

Yes I was just kidding. Actually the lesser known guys often give more insight about their time in the NBA since they don't have a brand to protect.

Lamar is fantastic everyone. If you aren't watching his videos, reading his blogs about the league (mostly Hornets stuff) or listening to his new podcasts, you are missing out. Keep it up Lamar.

Maybe you can get Jared Dudley on one day to talk about Ammo not taking showers. I need more info on that situation.
