I don't consider him to be intelligent either.

Who remembers this interview?

http://www.gq.com/story/derrick-rose-interview-gq-may-2012?currentPage=1%20target=new

In his condo, I ask Rose why he blew off the media the night before. He sighs and forces a wan smile. He has been expecting this question, if not necessarily so soon. "It was just too much," he says. "I just couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t deal with it. There were so many people. I saw them there from the other room. And when I thought about having to go in there, I just couldn’t work my way up to it." He pauses and takes a sip of water. His eyes go somewhere beyond my left ear. "There were so many of them. I hope they’ll forget about it."

Rose bristles at the thought of going out. In one way, this is refreshing. He just wants to do his own thing. But the more I think about it—the more I hear Rose talk about how little he enjoys interacting with strangers, how desperately he misses being able to walk around unnoticed, how mournful he gets when the topic of "attention" is breached, how obviously uncomfortable he is even in basic social situations outside his immediate circle—it strikes me as unbearably sad.

"Don’t get me wrong. I don’t take anything for granted," he says. "But it seems like the better I play, the more attention I get. And I can’t get away from it. You play great, you get attention. But I hate attention. It is weird. I’m in a bind. The more you win, the more they come."

"Sometimes it’s too much. Chicago..." He pauses. He is careful to say this just right. "Chicago isn’t used to stardom. Back when Michael was here, everyone was used to actors and singers and people being at the games. But there’s been a drought since then, and even celebrities, they’ll stop here to film a movie and then pop right back out. They don’t know how to act toward celebrity. So I always have someone with me. I can have a hat on, glasses on, whatever. People still notice me. If I go outside without a hat on, I feel like I’m naked." Rose can have the entire world, as long as he doesn’t leave his home. "This life doesn’t fit my personality."

"I won’t ever put myself in a bad position so that people can say bad things about me," he says. "I make smart decisions, and my friends and my family, they are all there for the right reason. I’m very mature for 23 years old, and I know that whatever I do can hurt someone."

The New York media would literally rip him apart.

Even if he is a douche and his teammates hate him, I feel kind of sad reading those quotes above. It gives a doomed feeling, like he could have never kept it together and it was all bound to warp his mind. The way he talked yesterday was not the words of a younger Rose who may have still had some common sense prior to being an MVP. But the way he talks now, he clearly has lost his way and he really doesn't know how selfish he sounds and how he rubs people the wrong way. Not everything stupid that he says or does makes him wicked, but it does look slightly tragic at this point. He just can't help himself and there is probably no one who will check him and help him keep his head straight.

Ever since Brooklyn born, Michael Jordan came to Chicago and the banners started rising the NBA has looked to the Bulls as the third glorious franchise behind the Celtics and Lakers. They prematurely gave Jay Williams this savior role...then Deng...then Derrick Rose.

The lesson for the league is stop anointing guys who haven't earned or won anything.

Gonna be funny watching the league back away from Rose after YEARS of building this guy up.

Rose was developing into a legit franchise player before the injury, so some of they hype I don't mind, because he led the Bulls to having the best record in the East two years in a row. If he did that in New York, us fans will be hyping him up also, and we probably won't mind as much because he is on our team and not one of our hated rivals during the 90s.

But ever since that injury things has been going downhill for the guy, on and off the court. People and fans loved him during his MVP speech, and for good reason, because he seemed like a good guy. But now with this rape charge, and this reputation of him just phoning it in when he is injured to just get a paycheck, that speech seemed very long ago.

He's still relatively young and I think he can still have a long career in this league, but I doubt he will ever reach the status he got in 2011. Bulls fans will move onto Butler, who I think is a good player, but he isn't some MVP guy and a talent that can lead his team to a title. They are still looking for that guy to take the torch from MJ, a torch that Rose has fumbled and dropped.

WAIT. Who said anything about injuries?!?!?

Derrick Rose was given a free pass the MINUTE he was drafted because he was a native Chicago boy and it's the Bulls.

Keep in mind, before Michael Jordan won his first title, in 1991 the franchise won ZERO championships. In fact, the Bulls were right up there with the Cubs as a futile franchise.

So this idea that Chicago is a basketball mecca has been FABRICATED by the media LONG BEFORE Derrick Rose was born.

As for rape charges, Kobe Bryant was in trouble in Colorado and he survived it.

The DIFFERENCE is, Derrick Rose has won NOTHING...Kobe has rings to substantiate his claim as one of the best ever (like it or not).

But a free pass on what though? Rose was a legitimate top 10 player around 2010-2012 before the injury. Maybe more people should have criticized him when he took forever getting back from injuries, but he didn't deserve much before getting hurt, he was developing just fine.

Your opinion of the popularity of the Bulls is HUGELY in part of the most popular player of all time in Jordan. Not sure how Rose should get blamed for that, his first few years going well, and then he led the team back to contending when he hit his prime MVP year. He's getting criticized now though, which I agree.

Why else would ANYONE be talking about the Bulls?

Remember the hype when the Bulls drafted Jamal Crawford, Eddy Curry, and Tyson Chandler under Bill Cartwright then Scott Skiles? Boy, did that implode. Then we had the Jay Williams and Deng era.

You call Derrick Rose a top ten player? Based on WHAT? His BEST numbers were under non-competitive years under Pete Myers, Jim Boylan, and Vinny Del Negro...then he had ONE season under Thibs where every thing came together...and that was it.

Rose has missed more games in the last few seasons than Tim Duncan did in his ENTIRE career. THAT's Greatness.

Since the Bulls claim it's all Thibs fault, then let's see him prove me wrong but I don't see this team going further in the playoffs but they'll have NICE, cushy stats.
