Re: H2H Draft Thread - Phystic, Steve NashidisX2, Phystic (running clock on)
I really like some of the diversity we're seeing in terms of the way teams are built. That's why I tend to favour H2H 9-cat over roto since you can actually "build around" your main draft picks and you're not SOL if you miss in the draft. I like to think that's closer to how actual basketball is done.
Next year I also plan to change up the way scoring is done. I think we'll be moving to 8 starters instead of 9 (again, starting next year), with a more strict games played limit. In fact, in terms of games played per week limit, I'm still trying figure out the best number. Any suggestions?
Right now we're at 36 (4 per slot), on the reasoning that you shouldn't be able to just start everybody. I previously had it at 45.

Well my frontcourt is completely screwed. All of you are selfish and drafted essentially every worthwhile front court player I could take at this spot. So I'm stuck drafting at the wing position. Guess I'll go with Aaron Afflalo

I wanna say ESPN standard is 40 games played?

I was comparing who was taken in which round in other drafts then just realized that since there is one more team here, guys will be gone quite a bit sooner here. Since there is an extra pick in every round, now we have about 9 additional guys gone that were available at this round (or similar draft position) in other drafts. Of course if you just look at draft slot by number it makes no difference.
Well that plus just the natural diversity in picks guys move around by a round or two. But ya the extra team and the apparent run on big men messed my pick all up. Oh well, like I said at the start not trying to take this overly serious. Otherwise I would be very unhappy right now ha

That would be with their standard 10 starters (4 games per slot). We're running 9 right now (at 36, its still 4 games per slot). The hard part is finding what is the balance between forcing owners to make decisions on who to start and not having such a low game limit that the bench is useless.

It's really kind of tough to judge your relative strength in basketball leagues with different team sizes. My team feels light in assists and blocks, but I guess all teams will be less heavy in all categories than the other three leagues. Plus it matters less here if you punt a cat or two.

Didn't realize we had one less starter.

I'm terrible at trading, always gunshy. But I do plan on attempting to be active in that respect ha

That is exactly my gripe with roto leagues. There is no flexibility when it comes to the draft. You can't build your team a certain way. The only real draft strategy is to get the best players. In my experience, it's not so much who had the most balanced team wins, it's whoever had the most stacked team. It seems like most roto winners are typically leading in nearly every category with lines like 11,12,10,9,10,12 etc. which sure you can say that's balanced. But so is the guy whose team is ranked in categories (for reference) 7,5,6,6,5,7 etc. The 'balance' aspect of roto is overblown. Also, in a roto draft, you will definitely get screwed out of 1 or 2 categories by the mid rounds.

Yes, Roto is tough. I hadn't done roto in years until I jumped into these leagues two years ago and placed 3rd in D, but in Premier I sucked. I think after two years I finally did a pretty good roto draft in D (I was always getting killed in 3s and assists).....yet I still didn't stack as many point guards as many did early. We will see. People are pretty savvy in Premier and now in D. There were a bunch of guys drafted very late in premier who went much earlier in D and CBA who I think might have been more properly valued in the lower leagues, but that obviously remains to be seen.

It's been weird, with certain people being injured and others just on the decline (Rondo/D-Will), the pg position has been way harder to draft than in the last few years. Maybe not as hard as 6 years ago, but it seemed like a lot of the best pg talent was gone after pick ~30 in Premier. I think people falling in the draft might have had a little to do with the quicker pace and for me at least worrying people would be gone by the time the draft snaked around. Having the other drafts makes it easier to get people's preferences too.

Yes, as you well know, Stanley Johnson's value skyrocketed throughout all four of our drafts (though now that I think about it, he dropped further in CBA than in D, but that was probably because in D, I was pegging him for later, but guys like Otto Porter and someone else I was going to take skyrocketed so I didn't want to miss him).

I was D league champion in 2011-2012, and have been in the premier going on 4 years now. Last year really, really rubbed me the wrong way with roto and here's why:
From rounds 5 to 9, I drafted: Ariza, Knight, Hill, Bogut, Carroll. Melo goes out with the injury of course. But all those guys outperformed their ADP by a fair amount and all were drafted earlier in the premier league this year... I essentially killed the draft (sans first pick lol) and qualified for this year's league using players nobody wanted but I have nothing to show for it.
Meanwhile, in the H2H league, a similar thing happened (Melo went out and I fielded a lot of spare parts) but I was still able to make the playoffs because the pieces complemented each other.
But hey, maybe my H2H team will suck and my premier team will flourish and I'll love roto

Yeah, injuries suck. I think two of my top players in our fantasy football league (Romo and Bryant) went out in week one. So I had to scramble after starting 0-3 and am now 2-3.
Injuries are always killer, but yes, that is the primary reason roto is outdated...it is more based on luck...all fantasy is largely based on luck, but if you a major injury to a top pick or a few players in roto you are done....the league for you becomes boring and it dilutes it for others as well. In H2H you can manage it, and if the player comes back, you can still make the playoffs, even as a low seed and maybe win, just like in real sports.

This is my 2nd time doing H2H, I played it two years ago (2013) and won. I was playing with a bunch of Magic fans and I just don't think they knew what they were doing. This is who I had on my roster.
Wilson Chandler
Pau Gasol
Gerald Green
Gordon Hayward
Lebron James
Kyle Korver
Paul Millsap
Joakim Noah
Jeff Teague
Jonas Valanciunas
John Wall
Gerald Wallace
Thadeus Young
Needless to say my team was stacked. I don't think I made a single trade, kept my same lineup all season. Also, it was a 12 man league.

Well that certainly is a stacked team. Are you sure it wasn't in your Magic imagination? If not,

Killer team man and good job winning another board's fantasy league. One of the goals of this Suns board is to achieve world domination by taking over all the fantasy leagues on this forum.
