I'll play devil's advocate for Baalke for this offseason in that he wasn't really planning to have as much cap space so I'm sure he didn't budget to spend it.

The retirements aside from J. Smith's was a surprise and I know he had some money earmarked for Aldon Smith counting on him not being a moron and getting arrested.

The other element in all of this is Baalke loves his draft picks and making moves in free agency reduces the amount of comp picks you receive.

But the guys he has signed have been a complete and utter bust. I'll give Torrey Smith a pass for now as there have been major problems with the offense that aren't his fault but everyone else has been hot garbage.

I just want to compare Baalke's record to mine. For fun. This is whom I would've taken in the 1st (I'm sure many can confirm this):

2009: Orakpo.................VS Crab
2010: Derrick Morgan........VS A. Davis
2010: Iupati...................Agreed for once
2011: Aldon...................Agreed for twice
2012: Cordy Glenn...........VS Jenkins
2013: Tyler Eifert............VS Reid (whom I liked)
2014: Bradley Roby..........VS Ward
2015: Shane Ray.............VS Armstead

I honestly like mine better.

Even Reid has looked like crap this season.

Over the last 3 drafts we've averaged over 11 players drafted. That's ridiculous. What are we supposed to do with all these players? How can we properly evaluate them and give them time to develop?

This is my biggest pet peeve with this dude. What happened to deliberate, quality>quantity picks?

Baalke took over in March 2010, so I wouldn't count the 2009/2010 drafts for or against him.

Another summary of Baalke's drafts:

Since 2011, Baalke's first year as general manager, the 49ers have made 49 picks ... and only eight are currently starters for the team. And since 2012, the 49ers have drafted 22 players in the first four rounds, and just four of those players have played more than 50 percent of snaps this season -- free safety Eric Reid, defensive back Jimmie Ward, center Marcus Martin and running back Carlos Hyde.

Part of a longer post on the fall of the team:

Why is Jed so impressed that he chose Trent over Jim anyways? Surely his analytics guys must have known that Baalke's draftees weren't cutting it?

Also don't teams interview potential draftees to try to suss out motivation or psychological issues? Because there's been more than one quitter, Borland and Coffee. Or as the blog notes, the highest number of off field issues by this team.

Or do they only screen and interview only candidates at the very top of the draft?

Of course the other thing is, could other coaches get more and better performance out of these same players?

Oh but Trent hired these coaches too, at least the assistants from the coordinators down.

It would not be surprising to find out that Jim clashed with Trent so much because he didn't like or agree with Trent's drafts, that he didn't respect Trent's ability to evaluate talent compared to his judgement because Trent didn't play the game, at least not at the pro level.

I don't believe Trent hired all the assistants. At least a couple of the assistants had ties to Tomsula prior to coming to the 49ers.

Matavias Bryant, whom people were talking about here before the 2014 draft, scored 2 TDs, including an electrifying catch and run that broke the game open today.

He has 10 TDs in 11 games played.

Here are the players whom the 49ers drafted BEFORE Bryant was selected #118 overall in the fourth round:

Code: Select all

2014,1,30,Jimmie Ward,DB,2015,0,0,0,1,13,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Northern Illinois
2014,2,57,Carlos Hyde,RB,2015,0,0,0,2,19,,,,,,166,708,7,21,116,0,,,Ohio St.
2014,3,70,Marcus Martin,C,2015,0,0,1,4,13,,,,,,,,,,,,,,USC
2014,3,77,Chris Borland,LB,2014,0,0,1,6,14,,,,,,,,,,,,2,1.0,Wisconsin
2014,3,100,Brandon Thomas,OL,2014,0,0,0,0,0,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Clemson
2014,4,106,Bruce Ellington,WR,2015,0,0,0,1,16,,,,,,6,28,1,10,106,2,,,South Carolina

So far you'd have to say Bryant is a better player than all of these, except for maybe Hyde and only because Hyde is going to get more touches.

Maybe it's the scouts?

I'm gonna have to say yes the scouts/WR coaches play a part. Every year we talk up WRs on this board and just about every year the team passes on them even in draft classes so loaded it seems like a no-brainer. This has been going on since before Baalke. The ones they do draft immediately have us scratching our heads.

WRs we liked on here off the top of my head that we passed on:
Antonio Bryant
DeSean Jackson (was a local player that had a lot of love on here drafted Balmer and Rachal before instead)
Brandon Marshall (Pozz and I loved him but we took Brandon Williams a round before)
James Jones another local player (Pozz and I loved him took Jason Hill two picks before
Mario Manningham (wanna say Mac liked him)
Doug Baldwin (didn't draft and I wanted him so bad)
Jeffrey (Was my favorite of the bunch)
Hopkins (Pozz, myself and Clyde I think loved him)
Moncrief (Was my draft crush)
Bryant and Arob (1z loved them)
JMat (Clyde loved him)

I really liked Roddy White but I wouldn't have taken him #1 overall.

As for WRs we did draft that some on here liked:
Tai Streets (Mac liked him?, Derrick Hamilton (Pozz liked him?), Brandon Lloyd (DH loved him), Josh Morgan (I liked him) and Crabtree (Bingo and some others maybe Dodub were ok with it)

Devey and Pears have no business playing in an NFL regular season game. Marcus Martin is looking like a bust too.

That Trent Baalke, whom Jed York chose over Harbaugh, acquired these scrubs is an indictment on him and the coaching staff, who continue to play these nonentities.

Heard that Deion ripped into the ownership and that the stadium was half empty. Good, York needs to be exposed for the horrible owner that he is.

At least Snyder earned the fortune with which he bought the Redskins. He should command more respect than York, and Snyder is proud to offend people by keeping the racist name.
