Earl wasn't a PG. I don't think Bing was either.

Magic played all positions at various times if only briefly for some. But when the starters
were introduced at the beginning of games, it seems pretty clear that the majority of the
time, he was the PG. Loved Magic. He could do it all. But I loved Stockton too. Tough, smart
highly skilled and IIRC, still the all time assist king which is partly a function of longevity.

Tiny might ought to be more highly ranked. Being scoring leader and assist leader in the same
season is pretty heady stuff. I don't recall his teams ever being very good which you could use
to argue in either direction, could have been more highly regarded if he had won a chip or
why didn't he win one if he was so great.

What would you classify Bing as though? I don't think SG is quite right either. He was the primary ball handler for most of his teams and had a lot of seasons where he averaged over 6 or 7 assists per game.

I can see him being classified as a SG though, to be consistent with Jerry West being classified as a SG.

Peal, yeah, he should probably be considered a SG. He was a scorer first and foremost.

I think the confusion about how to classify the historical guards comes from how much less specialized guard play used to be. You just kind of had "lead guard" who handled the ball the most, and could have been a scorer or a passer.

The level of specialization you see in guards today is thanks to Isiah, Jordan, and Stockton coming along in the 80's IMO. They pretty much defined the PG and SG positions for the subsequent generations.

I have a hard time putting Tiny above any of the guys I ranked ahead of him. Glove was one of the best all around PGs ever, a better all around player than Tiny IMO. He won a DPOY, and led a couple of 60 win teams, including a Finals team. Nash too led some 60 game winners and won two MVPs. And Cousy was the best guard of his era when he was in his prime. He mastered the Pre-Wilt/Russell NBA style of play. I don't think you can say Tiny reached a similar stature. Tiny vs Clyde is interesting since their careers overlapped for a good chunk of time. I think Clyde was a better all around player, and he was the leader of those championship Knicks teams. I think Tiny is underappreciated, but I'm not sure who I'd bump out of the way for him to move up.

I suppose I must have just caught Stockton in a bad game. If Stockton had played better, Utah could have won it all especially considering that Scottie Pippen was playing with an injured back.

Stockton never wowed me when he played. He was just so darned efficient and effective. In the playoffs much less so than the regular season however.

Curry is playing like he's the GOAT right now. I'm sure he's gotta cool off but my goodness, I don't think I've ever seen a better 5 game stretch.

Yes we could have had him...but Ernie thought Randy Foye & Mike Miller could help our roster immediately. :(

How crazy if I had gotten my wish on draft night in 2009: Trading the 5th pick for the 6th & 20th and drafting Curry & Lawson.

Again though, if it wasn't traded the consensus pick was Rubio. Wouldn't have happened regardless.

Not talking what Ernie would have done instead... Ernie was pretty insistent on trading the pick to the highest bidder, if not the Foye/Miller deal then probably some other terrible trade would have happened. I was talking what I would have done at the time.

And pound for pound, Stockton seemed like the strongest guy in the NBA. He was a tough physical defender for a little guy.

Rubio is off to a great start. His PER is 26.7.

47.0 PER? That's like sci-fi for a guard. Not sure even Oscar Robertson or that Jordan guy ever did that for a 5 game period.

I don't know how you'd calculate PER for a small stretch of a historic player's career, but MJ had a 13 game stretch at the end of the '88-'89 season where he had 10 triple doubles and averaged this:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jordami01/gamelog/1989/#328-340-sum:pgl_basic

I'm sure somewhere within there you can find a five game stretch with a better PER than Curry's. His average GmSc for that entire stretch is actually higher than Curry's in five.

A given players numbers will look crazy only until you start comparing them to MJ's.

Kobe also had a five game stretch in the 2006-2007 season where he averaged 54 points a game on 53% shooting from the floor. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bryanko01/gamelog/2007/#768-772-sum:pgl_basic

That must have been an absolutely crazy PER too.

Curry's D is pretty darn impressive as well. Might help him move into the top 5 of all time if he can keep it up.

Really?

Paul is terrific. Best PG in the game the past few years. One of the best ever. And he really hasn't had "elite" talent around him. Griffin is a very good player, but his hype exceeds his actual on-court production. Jordan is terrific, albeit limited. Redick is a solid SG. That's a good start, but after that the roster is THIN. In my metric, those are the only four on the Clippers last season who rated above average.

Agree with this. Their bench is atrocious thanks to GM Doc Rivers. They've got like 4-5 NBA players on their roster outside of CP3, some old dudes, and a few unplayable scrubs such as Doc Rivers' son.

CP3 is one of the best PGs ever and is significantly better than Stockton. just lol @ that.

Definitely would have been Wizardry -- esp. since Lawson went #18. Of course w/ our #20 we still could have had Eric Maynor! :)

Nah... Make that Collison. Then, instead of trading our high R2 pick for chump change, we could have traded down for 2 picks and gotten Danny Green and Patty Mills. And instead of...

I wouldn't lol at that. Stockton was a phenomenal player, and I wouldn't say the difference between him and Chris Paul was significant. But Paul really is one of the best PGs ever. With Paul and Stockton, choosing between the two may end up being a choice between higher peak vs. sustained excellence. Stockton was playing All-NBA quality basketball at 40+ years old -- and had been for more than a decade. We'll see if Paul can match that kind of excellence and longevity.

I remember being aghast (if I can get that through the censors) that the trade with Minny didn't get us the 18th pick. At the time, I thought Lawson was the top PG in the class - oops. To be fair, I was ahead of the curve on Harden.

Plus 1. LOLing at Stockton? I could understand laughing at his basketball shorts, but that guy was so consistently good for so long. Point guard for the Dream Team. Not the best ever - but a legit HOFer.

Oh. I misread your post. If you're saying that Chris Paul is better than Stockton was, I agree. The one area where Stockton may beat him is in longevity. But I'd take Paul over Stockton.

John Wall hasn't been playing like a top 5 point guard in the past two games. He has 20 assists but 15 turnovers while shooting 36% in those games.
