From the highlights, seems to have the fluid ball handling and body control/coordination of a guard. In a 6' 10 package? Now THAT is what a generational prospect ought to look like (*cough* You know damn well who I'm alluding to *cough*)

I would do embarrassing things to make that happen.

He hasn't shot a three this entire season.

hmmm.. nice stat line today but he didn't look great offensively and he passed up the last shot twice and his team lost.

He has 0 confidence in his jumper, and he is going to need to hit those to open the defenses up, no way he can play SF in the league unless his shot improves dramatically or the team is completely built around him.
He is really talented, but remains a risky prospect.

He's a top 3 prospect, we all know he's great. The decision is where in that top 3 he goes. He stuffed his stat sheet by playing every minute and he wasn't playing against a very good team.

He is no doubt (to me) the number 1 pick. He is a legit 6'10 point guard. He is however going have to get some confidence in his jump shot if he wants to be an all time great. He doesn't even look to shoot which is troubling. I am sure once he gets into the pros and it becomes his job he will become an adequate shooter.

If not they are just going play off him and he won't score as easy with the NBA's size.
The hero Orlando deserves is out there somewhere, Dwight was not the one we needed. So we will hunt for him...

Odom was a better prospect overall, when you factor in his defensive ability

Simmons just has somewhat flashier passing (how much is that really worth?)

Stats don't tell the entire story. The way he looked out there the entire game was impressive. Even when he made mistakes he was always right there to clean up after himself. He blew a dunk and then fought under the basket for the offensive rebound when his team got the ball back on the same possession. Other than that last play of the game there were numerous times throughout the game where he took it upon himself to score and if he wasn't looking to score he was finding open team mates. Whether the opposition is a great team or not shouldn't matter especially if the kid is showing you he has the right tools, attitude, and work ethic at such a young age.

He should have taken that last shot but is surrounded by 3 point shooters who are all better at that then him. I can understand him passing that up for what might have been a better shot. Hopefully it'll serve as motivation for him to work on his jump shot relentlessly. I've seen improvement in him so that's a good sign. He's an absolute work horse. Put the team on his back down the stretch. 9/11 free throws this game. 17/21 through all games. That's a big improvement on the 60% he shot last year. Oh and I think it's 3 turnovers through the last 3 games which is pretty exceptional.

Don't see this. Simmons doesn't have anything like Odom's outside game but he's better on the boards and a far better passer. Simmons looks pretty safe with the ball and may be more efficient as a scorer, though that may be driven by his current style of passing unless he's looking at an easy path to the rim and that may not be a good thing (on the plus side anything in transition is a easy path to the rim for him).

No sign of Odom's academic or off-court issues either if you factor that into prospect assessment.

Disagree that he's better on the boards. Odom averaged 10rpg his freshman year at Rhode Island, this guy was putting up 15, 17, 20 rebound games in the NBA. He's got a longer wingspan and was more physical, I wouldn't assume Simmons projects to be a better rebounder than LO was.

Simmons may look more efficient as a scorer in college playing against small weaklings, at the next level when he's forced to create from the perimeter and hit jumpshots that efficiency is going to go way down. I don't think Simmons has hit a single jumpshot yet. It's clear as day that he lacks halfcourt skills right now.

Simmons may be a slightly less-TO prone passer than LO was, I'll give you that. He certainly doesn't project to be better defensively, though. Either way, both Simmons and Odom had a lot of talent but neither are/were generational prospects.

he looks like a much better version of lamar odom, just need that jumper working by the time he gets to the nba. he also struggled on defense a ton, needs to work on that. Otherwise the guy looks elite in every other category

Odom is also a drug-addict and a mental midget with all kinds of other problems. Odom SHOULD HAVE been a superstar. He never wanted it bad enough.

Simmons is playing the game he will be expected to play in the NBA.

However, because he is in college, he is also expected to take every important shot. This might make him post awesome stats in school but it doesn't necessarily make him a better player.

Working on his outside shooting and learning how to play better team defence are the only knocks I see on him. Also, he should be the no.1 pick (cannot say will be as the stupidity of GM's cannot be predicted) and he will be a perennial all star when he gets to the NBA.
